Devin was an ex-Ferrari dealer and raced with Phil Hill, Carroll Shelby and a few other greats and then decided to build his own racing sports cars, so he made the most gorgeous Devin SS, built on chassis made in Ireland by John Tojeiro’s men.
To fund the project, Devin sold bodies made from his molds. Everyone bought them, ripped their TRs and Healeys to bits and turned them into Ferrari look-alikes.
The Devin SS was expensive and Devin wanted to offer a less expensive car and thus was born the Devin D type. D stood for Deutschland, and the cars used Porsche 356 engines — at least until Ferdinand Porsche found out and told Porsche dealers they would look their dealerships.
So Devin created the C type using the air-cooled flat-6 engine from the Chevrolet Corvair. In proper tune, the car’s could sprint to 60 miles per hour in four seconds and had a top speed of 130 miles per hour.
Not bad for 1959. Today, this is an historic racer to be revoked with, I can tell you.9 comments
