FIVA sees push against petroleum as challenge for global collector car community

0

“Let’s hope we’ll soon be in kickdown, rather than lockdown,” was the message from Tiddo Bresters, president of the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens, speaking at the recent general assembly of the international federation for ancient vehicles, an event held online in this year of the coronavirus pandemic.

FIVA’s mission is to protect the long-term vitality of the collector car hobby and to keep public roads open to vintage vehicles.

“The transition to fossil-free energy is an enormous challenge,” Bresters said.“We want to see the ‘moving museum’ of historic vehicles in the 2030 landscape and beyond, and to do this we need to spread our message to the rest of society, helping people to understand our passion for motoring heritage.

“We cannot do without lobbying.

In the past, our focus has been primarily on the EU, but we must make sure to be heard all over the world – where the same concerns and arguments apply. So in 2021, FIVA’s Legislation Committee will be ‘exporting’ its hard work more widely outside the EU, helping to ensure we are united around the world.”

The federation said its lobbying activities will be supported by its recent and soon-to-be-published socio-economic survey which studied such factors as the number of historic cars, motorcycles and utilitarian vehicles in various country and how many miles they travel, the average age of owners and how much those owners contribute to national economies.

“Two further factors in protecting our heritage,” the federation noted it in its post-assembly announcement, “are the need to bring younger people on board, something we have worked hard on in 2020 via social media channels, and also international cooperation.”

Among those speaking at the assembly was Marie-Claude Machon-Honoré, chairperson of the liaison committee of the NGO-UNESCO, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

“UNESCO and FIVA share many common goals in protecting, preserving and promoting our heritage,” Bresters noted, “and as Dr Machon-Honoré emphasised, both organizations see the younger generation as vital to the future.”

The FIVA announcement quoted Macho-Honoré as telling the group, “UNESCO strongly believes in the power of heritage as a positive force to preserve identity, and the sense of belonging to communities, especially for younger generations.”

Soon after the general assembly, FIVA announced the 2020 winners of its Culture Awards. They are:

  • Research — The Rootes Archive Center Trust for its storage and cataloging of material relating to the heritage of the Rootes Group and successors.
  • Dedicated service by individuals or organizations — Alberto Lenz Krahl for his work on behalf of the historic vehicle movement in Mexico.
  • Education — Hebert Haberbusch, who has trained 50 apprentices in vehicle restoration and preservation.

Pick of the Day: 1953 Chevrolet sedan delivery retro street rod

12

Basic utility was the goal of the Chevrolet sedan delivery, an inexpensive 2-door wagon with panel-truck sides. They were used mainly as delivery vans and work trucks, their stylish appearance merely an afterthought.

Those that survived the rigors of working life were eventually rediscovered by street rodders, who took advantage of that styling to create such custom cruisers as the Pick of the Day, a 1953 Chevrolet 150 sedan delivery

Chevrolet’s 1953 models were an update of the GM brand’s all-new 1949 design, the first following World War II.  Larger, bolder grilles were added, windshields became curved and one-piece, and the flanks were trimmed down to give the Chevys a more-modern appearance.

This retro-rod is described by the Maple Lake, Minnesota, dealer advertising the Chevy on ClassicCars.com as an “excellent professional street rod build.”

chevrolet

While ’53 Chevrolets were conservatively powered by 235cid 6-cylinder engines, customizers regularly have stuffed various V8s under their broad hoods.  This sedan delivery is powered by a modern GM 350cid engine linked with a 3-speed automatic transmission, along with power steering, power brakes and air conditioning.

The body presents beautifully with crisp paint and gleaming chrome; the seller notes that the car was recently repainted with base coat/clear coat for extra shine.

The plain steel sides of this Chevy seem ready for the next owner to apply the logo of a business, real or imagined, or some other graphic enhancement.

The custom interior features high-back bucket seats, console, tilt steering wheel and a modern gauge package fitted to the original dashboard.  Everything works, the seller adds, and the Chevrolet rides on a new set of radial tires, mounted to steel wheels with dog-dish hubcaps to enhance the vintage style.

The Chevrolet retro-rod seems reasonably priced at $21,950, or as the seller says: “Why restore when you can drive and enjoy and show off now and for less money.”

Rare Duesenberg Model X donated to ACD museum

0

One of only four surviving 1927 Duesenberg Model X dual-cowl phaetons has been donated to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in northeast Indiana. The donation was made by Perry and Margie Pintzow, who a year earlier had given the museum a Duesenberg Model A running chassis.

“The Model X was a transition model for Duesenberg and represented an improvement upon the sporty Straight-Eight engine in their passenger car,” the museum said in its announcement. “Different valve angle, moving the exhaust and intake together, and modified timing resulted in a modest increase in horsepower from 88 to 100.

“However, E. L. Cord wanted something grander.

“In total, it is believed that 13 Duesenberg Model X’s were constructed, with only five of them receiving bodies. Of those five, only four remain, including the only Duesenberg Model X speedster owned by the museum, making the museum the stewards of half of the extant bodied model X’s in the world.”

The museum noted that the car has coachwork by Locke of New York, is the only surviving example dual-cowl phaeton, and was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Salon in 1928 “wearing the identical color scheme seen today.” The car had been owned by Reno, Nevada, casino magnate Bill Harrah and was restored during his ownership.

Petersen sets virtual tours for students

The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is well known for bringing in busloads of students from Southern California to learn about automotive history. In light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the museum has developed 60-minute virtual tours followed by live lessons with a museum educator.

The lessons follow California Curriculum Standards, the museum said, and are based on various grade levels, from K-2 through high school.

“The museum believes that the automobile can be an essential learning tool for students, and part of the museum’s education initiative is to deepen their knowledge and connection to topics that support California’s curriculum standards,” said Terry Karges, the museum’s executive director. “We are thrilled to be able to offer students and teachers the ability to learn about automotive history in an enjoyable and safe environment.”

‘Gastrowagon’ featured at Bonhams MPH auction

0

A Land Rover that was converted into the “Gastrowagon” and featured in the British television series River Cottage is going up for bidding December 11 during Bonhams’ MPH auction at England’s Bicester Heritage, the former RAF training base that has become a vintage vehicle showplace.

The television show featured celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Bonhams said the “Gastrowagon” recently underwent a complete restoration.

“The circa 1982 long wheelbase (109 inches) 4×4, converted as a camper-cum-kitchen, became familiar to viewers of the chef’s 1990s series A Cook on the Wild Side, as Hugh’s transport in which he toured the British countryside in search of wild ingredients,” Bonhams said in its announcement.

Gastrowagon

“Built especially for the program, the Gastrowagon’s unusual features include a fully functioning kitchen at the back with a two-burner hob, oven, and fridge, all in very good working order and covered by a wind/waterproof canopy.

“Sleeping accommodation is provided by a roof-mounted boat and ancillaries include a shower, basin – and vintage ice cream maker. One extra special feature is Hugh’s signature on the bulkhead.”

Bonhams said the vehicle had spent 25 years “in the wilderness” before being restored by Land Rover specialists John Brown 4×4, and now reportedly runs like new.

“Land Rovers are always popular at MPH sales and we are pleased to offer this true one-off which would be perfect for anyone wanting to take a post-lockdown staycation,” said Rob Hubbard, head of Bonhams MPH auctions.

Bonhams expects the vehicle to sell for £25,000 to £30,000 ($33,500 to $40,175).

1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville

Also on the MPH docket are a 1948 Land Rover Series 1 accessorized with a Capstan winch, a 1992 Land Rover Camel Trophy support vehicle that’s been driven to India and back three times, a 1962 Bentley S2 Continental formerly owned by Latin American band leader and Coconut Grove club owner Edmundo Ros, a 1957 AC Aceca, a 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, and a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado “Mayhem” monster truck.

Audi unveils R8 Panther supercar for 2021

0

Audi launches its 2021 R8 model line with an exclusive R8 Panther edition that will be limited to 30 units with special details for the rear-driven, V10-powered sports coupe. The cars are due in Audi’s US dealerships during December.

The 30 Panther models will get Panther Black crystal effect paint with carbon exterior mirror housings, 20-inch wheels with red trim, black Audi rings and badges, carbon interior and exterior packages, black leather interior with Crimson red stitching, racing-shell seats with Nappa leather surfaces, diamond-stitched Alcantara headliner, sport exhaust system with sound-amplifying technology, and Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Audi said R8 Panther chassis have been adapted for rear-wheel drive from their usual quattro setup with solid rather than hollow axles, stiffer front anti-roll bar and increased negative camber at the rear.

In addition, “The electromechanical power steering – free of torque steer – enables precise handling and driver feedback. For a heightened driving experience, the driver can choose ‘dynamic’ mode in the standard Audi drive select and set the Stabilization Control ESC to ‘sport’.”

Audi also did an RS 5 Panther edition in 2019, offering 100 units of that model.

The R8 Panther is powered by a naturally aspired 5.2-liter V10 rated at 532 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. Audi says the car will sprint to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds on its way to a top track speed of 201 mph.

Manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing for the 201 R8 Panther is $183,300.

Pick of the Day: 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350SL luxury top-down cruiser

11

In spite of the negative things that the year 2020 has brought so many people, there’s been one reward for automotive hobbyists during the coronavirus pandemic:  Additional time for project cars.

With shelter-in-place orders in effect, curfews in place, and the closure of so many social venues, many have turned their attention to the garage or workshop.  One such person is a private seller on ClassicCars.com with a Mercedes-Benz SL advertised as a “COVID project.”

The Pick of the Day is a low-mileage 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350SL that has been painstakingly restored, with more than 200 hours invested over the course of this year, the seller says in the ad.

“I have restored it as if I were keeping it, using all high-quality replacement parts and correct spec fluids,” the seller states.

Presented in an image gallery that looks like it came straight out of the Mercedes-Benz promotional catalog, this SL in Cambria, California, rides on an R107 chassis and is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Mercedes

The SL label for Mercedes two-seaters stands for “super light,” with dates back to 1954 and the 300SL Gullwing race car.  By the 1970s, the SL model had established a foothold in the luxury marketplace as the must-have roadster for affluent performance enthusiasts.  Many SL models, like this one, came with both hard and soft tops.

The odometer on this example shows only about 29,000 original miles, which the seller believes to be original to the car.  Among the items on the Mercedes’ 2020 restoration checklist were a number of service items, including recent brakes, tires and ignition work.  In addition, the nearly 50-year-old carpet and interior got some much-needed TLC.  The results appear to speak for themselves.

Mercedes

The seller has hyperlinked the vehicle ad with his personal website on, which spells out in greater detail the background of the Mercedes and its return to roadworthiness after many years of sitting in a friend’s driveway.  Photos from pre-restoration are also included there.

“This SL is a sweetheart,” the seller concludes.  “You can literally fly into central CA and drive this car home with no hesitation.”

Mercedes

Without a doubt, this seller definitely made the most of his spare time in 2020.  Hopefully, he gets a chance to enjoy a few top-down cruises as a reward for his efforts before the Mercedes is sold.  The asking price is $19,200.

Audi announces Dakar Rally effort for 2022

1

Audi is revising its motorsports program, plotting a return to Le Mans and entering for the first time in 2022 “one of the greatest challenges in motorsport,” the Dakar Rally.

“The brand with the four rings will be competing in the famous Dakar Rally for the first time in 2022 with an innovative prototype,” Audi Sport announced in a brief news release.

Audi will enter the desert rally with an electric-powered prototype vehicle.

“The alternative drive concept combines an electric drivetrain with a high-voltage battery and a highly efficient energy converter for the first time,” the company said. “Cross-country rallying will be the spearhead of the factory motorsport commitment in the future.”

Audi said it has ended “factory involvement” in the Formula E racing series for electric vehicles, but will offer its powertrain to customer teams competing in that series.

A multifaceted commitment to motorsport is and will remain an integral part of Audi’s strategy,” said Markus Duesmann, Audi AG chairman.“We want to continue demonstrating the brand’s slogan ‘Vorsprung durch Technik‘ in  international top-level motorsport in the future and develop innovative technologies for our road cars. The toughest rally in the world is the perfect stage for this.”

“After many international successes in a wide range of categories, Audi is thus returning to rallying, which marked the beginning of the brand’s successful history in motorsport,” the company added. “From 1981, the Audi quattro revolutionized rallying. Today, permanent four-wheel drive is a standard, not only for rally cars. It also guarantees maximum safety in the sportiest Audi production models, and now also electrically in the e-tron models.

“Audi is the first car manufacturer that has committed to develop a viable alternative drive concept for the Dakar Rally, making it a pioneer in motorsport once again. In 2012, Audi achieved the first victory of a hybrid racing car in the Le Mans 24 Hours. The Audi R18 e-tron quattro remained unbeaten in the world’s most important endurance race three times in a row.”

Audi won the German Touring Car championship a dozen times

“Customer racing remains the second major pillar in Audi AG’s future motorsport program,” the company continued. “Audi Sport customer racing will continue to offer its customers a comprehensive model portfolio, as well as intensive service for worldwide racing. In addition, the program includes competing with the Audi R8 LMS in major endurance races like the Nürburgring 24 Hours and in international racing series such as the Intercontinental GT Challenge.

“We are intensively preparing to enter the new sports prototype category LMDh with its highlight races, the Daytona 24 Hours and Le Mans 24 Hours,” added Julius Seebach, managing director of Audi Sport GmbH. “The most important message for our fans is that motorsport will continue to play an important role at Audi.”

Audi launched its Audi Sport factory racing program in 1978 and since then has posted multiple victories at Le Mans and won the German Touring Car Championship 12 times.

Two legacies come to life in Ducati Diavel 1260 Lamborghini

Italian elegance from two worlds collide in a breathtaking collaboration between Ducati and Lamborghini resulting in the Ducati Diavel 1260 Lamborghini, a motorcycle that celebrates the cooperation between the two companies.  The bike is a creative display of sportiness, Italian design, and the connection never lost between motorcycle and automobile.

Inspired by the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 and based on the Ducati Diavel 1260 S, the focus of the project was to redesign components from the Sián FKP 37 to transfer to the motorcycle world.

For example, the lightweight forged wheels reflect the design of those on the car, while the air intakes and radiator covers made of carbon fibre show more of a cross between automobile and motorcycle by keeping the design comfortably conformed to the main frame of the bike.

“The Ducati Diavel inspired by the Lamborghini Sián celebrates our shared values: we are both Italian, we are inherently sporty and our design always distinguishes our creations,” said Andrea Ferraresi, director of Ducati Centro Stile. “The Diavel 1260 Lamborghini has been created by using the same design language that distinguishes the Sián FKP 37.”

Also redesigned by Centro Stile Ducati, the muffle cover, spoiler, central tank cover, seat cover, front and rear mudguards, dashboard cover and headlight frame are made of carbon fiber, giving the Diavel 1260 Lamborghini an aggressive sporty demeanor.

“We are convinced that our design is strong and one of the most recognizable in the automotive sector,” said Mitja Borkert, head of design at Automobili Lamborghini. “The unique silhouette, clean but extremely distinguished, defines the base of our design language.

“Our visionary design approach allows us to transfer our DNA to other products: this was achieved through strong teamwork, sharing our style and the advantage of being two brands inspired by the same values and a commitment to ‘fun to drive’.”

A collaboration between Centro Stile Ducati and Centro Stile Lamborghini, the paints applies to the bike are the same as those used for the Sián FKP 37.  Verde Gea is the color code for all but the frame, undertray and forged rims, which are embellished in the Oro Electrum color.

The motorcycle will be produced by Ducati in a limited and numbered edition of 630 units, which is 10 times 63, which is the number included in the livery design celebrating 1963, the year the Sant’Agata Bolognese company was founded.

RUF offers resto-mod program for Porsche 964

RUF Automobile, the German company known for producing Porsche-based supercars and resto-mod classics, is accepting orders for its new effort giving air-cooled Porsche 964 models “modern supercar performance” capabilities.

Porsche produced the 964 generation of its 911 model from 1989-1994. They were the first 911s to offer all-wheel drive and Tiptronic automatic transmissions.

For their donor car and €350,000 ($425,000), RUF says customers will receive a RUF RCT Evo with a turbocharged engine rated at 425 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

Porsche 964

Customers also have the option of a RUF’s carbon-fiber body “for better aerodynamics and less weight, while optional carbon-ceramic brakes, center-lock wheels and an integrated roll cage complete the package,” the company said.

“While the technology has evolved since 1990, the formula for a fun car has not,” added Estonia Ruf, co-owner of the family run business. “The RCT takes that formula and turns up the dial.

“The car has the same feeling you might expect from a 964, but with more power and less weight for a higher over-all performance. The recipe didn’t change, the ingredients just got better.”

Porsche 964

RUF was founded as a general service garage in 1939 by Alois Ruf Sr. The company expanded, in 1955 building full-size tourist buses and in 1963 began specializing in Porsche vehicles, and in 1975 launched its first RUF-enhanced Porsches.
