Quartet of historic racing cars joins RM Sotheby’s London docket

Three historic racing cars from the Autobau Collection and a 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Group B rally car have been added to the docket for RM Sotheby’s London auction, scheduled for October 24 at the Olympia.

“Our London auction is shaping up to be a truly diverse sale with historically significant cars to suit all interests and tastes,” Augustin Sabatie-Garat, RM Sotheby’s European auction manager, is quoted in the company’s announcement.

“The addition of these four cars of established motorsport pedigree gives yet more credence to the London sale, with each of the new consignments celebrated in their own field of motorsport. 

1985 Lancia Delta S4

“The Lancia is preserved perfectly as a reminder of the golden age of Group B rallying, while the three cars from the Autobau Collection are each significant in their own right and present the perfect opportunity for would-be collectors of motorsport history and vintage racers to acquire something special at our auction.”

The cars from the Swiss-based Autobau Collection are a 1994 Ferrari 412 that raced in Formula One, a Porsche 962C that was a two-time entrant in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and a Maserati MC12 GT1.

The 1994 Ferrari 412 T1 is chassis No. 149, and was driven to third place in the Brazilian Grand Prix by Jean Alesi and two second place in Italy by Gerhard Berger. 

The car was the second of eight 412 T1s produce and served as a backup car after its first two races. RM Sotheby’s expects the car to sell for as much as £2 million ($2.4 million). 

The 1990 Porsche 962C is chassis No. 962-159, finished 13th at Le Mans in its initial run for the Japanese Trust Racing Team but did not finish the 1991 round-the-clock event. The pre-auction estimated value runs up to £1.6 million ($1.9 million). 

The 2006 Maserati was purchased new by the Autobau Collection and was raced in GT1 competition. It is chassis No. 24053 and finished 3rd in the GT1 class at Road America in 2007 and also competed in other American Le Mans Series events.

It sustained damage in that race and was rebuilt by Doran Racing. Estimated value runs up to £2.5 million ($3 million), according to RM Sotheby’s

The 1985 Lancia Delta S4 rally car is chassis No. 202, wears Martini livery and was driven by Finnish driver Henri Toivenen to victory in the 1985 RAC Rally in England. Pre-sale estimated value is as much as £800,000 ($971,880).
