Spring is just around the corner, so it’s time to prepare for camping season. And what better way to commune with nature than with the Pick of the Day, a 1976 Volkswagen Westfalia camper bus.
This cheery yellow microbus was outfitted by VW’s official van converter, Westfalia-Werke of Germany, to supply some of the comforts of home in a minimal amount of space. The iconic popup roof provides extra headroom while at the campsite.
The VW has just over 33,000 miles showing on its five-digit odometer, according to the Kentwood, Michigan, dealer advertising the camper on ClassicCars.com. The bus is powered by a 2.0-liter flat-4 engine and rare 3-speed automatic transmission, both of which have been rebuilt, the dealer notes.
“This highly documented Westy is in very nice driving condition and cosmetically well cared for with many new parts,” the dealer says in the ad. “The inside is clean and nicely presented with all proper cabinets in place. The sink is installed along with water tank. The cooler is in place as and plenty of extra curtains and the mosquito net ready to be installed.”
The front seats were reupholstered recently in the plaid material matching the rear and bed cushions, the dealer adds.
“Abundant” service records come with the VW, the dealer says, and everything on the vehicle is in working order, aside from the factory radio. It does seem odd that the powertrain would need to be rebuilt with so little mileage.
“The exterior is clean and painted in the proper Chrome Yellow from VW, and new window seals are evident around the car along with freshly painted front and rear bumpers,” the seller says. “Chrome trim rings and accessory parts appear to be recently replaced and show nicely.
The automatic transmission would be a selling feature for those who don’t care to (or don’t know how to) shift for themselves but desired a classic VW camper bus. These automatics are reported to be sturdy units that work well and don’t take away from the power delivered by the 2.0-liter engine, which originally was designed by Volkswagen for the Porsche 914 sports car.
The asking price for this attractive VW camper is $29,900.
