Pick of the Day: 1987 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

The gauge cluster on the fourth-generation Corvette is one of my absolute favorites. It has a distinct retro look with bar-style illuminated readouts for the speedometer, tachometer, and fuel level, combined with an inset digital speedometer and vivid colors throughout. In fact, the only thing that isn’t matching with the futuristic (can we call it futuristic if it’s 37 years old?) design is the mechanical odometer.

That odometer, by the way, shows only about 10,800 miles on it. Whoa.

The Pick of the Day is a low-mileage 1987 Chevrolet Corvette listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Pueblo, Colorado. (Click the link to view the listing)

“Excellent condition Corvette is family-owned, bought off the showroom floor,” the listing says. The seller says that the car has always been garaged (and there is a photo in the listing with the car garaged and covered to prove it!). The exterior is described as “mint,” and that is easy to believe considering it has only been driven 10,000 miles in its lifetime.  A 2015 appraisal from Corvette Center in Fountain, Colorado valued the car at $17,220 according to documentation the seller has provided.

The C4’s lifespan ran from 1984 to 1996, and it used General Motors’ Y-body platform which was a “uniframe” as opposed to a traditional body-on-frame layout like the prior generations. Right out of the gate, the C4 was a sales success – largely because enthusiasts had been waiting since 1982 for the new generation to launch (the handful of 1983 cars produced were prototype and pre-production only). For 1984, the Corvette sold 51,547 units across 17 months. Sales dropped in a linear direction for the next four years, with 39,000, 35,000, 30,000, and 22,000 units being sold respectively.

According to the Corvette enthusiast website CorvSport, there were 14 different exterior colors available on the 1987 Corvette. Today’s featured car is Silver Beige Metallic, which strikes me as a relatively rare shade for a flashy car. One of my favorite things about this car is that it is being sold as a “package deal” with promotional materials like a demonstration cassette for the audio system, an owner’s manual, extra keys, and a car cover.

The asking price is $15,950. You won’t find many one-owner Corvettes with mileage like this!

(Let alone one from the 1980s with that awesome instrument cluster). Totally rad.
