“Selling our beautiful, custom-built, award-winning 1940 Ford two-door sedan,” the listing begins. “This is a one-of-a-kind street rod with a genuine original steel body and a complete boxed frame. It features a complete no-expense-spared frame-off restoration.”
The quality of the build becomes apparent when we learn about some of the many awards that the car has received since completion. The trophy collection, which will be included when the car transfers to the new owner, includes many First Place, Best of Show, Best Paint, and Best Street Rod accolades. One of the photos included in the listing shows over a dozen such awards.
What makes this car so special? To start with, it went through a five-year restoration that was completed in 2000. Over the last 20 years, it has been driven just 10,000 miles. The original build sheet outlines some of the upgrades, including shaved doors, shaved trim, shaved rain gutters, Budnick wheels, a custom fuel door, billet aluminum mirrors, custom running boards, a custom hood, and dipped window tint. And that’s before we even climb inside the cabin to appreciate what happened there.
Adding the “go” to accompany the “show” is a performance-built drivetrain: Power (far beyond adequate power, I might add) comes from a 350cid small-block V8 with a Weiand 6-71 blower and dual Edelbrock Performance four-barrel carburetors. Upgrades include a Flowmaster exhaust system, a polished aluminum radiator, ceramic coated headers, and a Mallory ignition system. Torque is transferred to the rear wheels through a Turbo 350 automatic transmission.
It can be rewarding to build a custom car from the ground up and to see it take shape. That process (speaking from experience here) can also be time-consuming, challenging, and more expensive than you had ever imagined. So, to those of you who want a show-winner without the stress, here you go.
