In the history of long-lived vehicle models, the Volkswagen Bus deserves to win some sort of award. Production initially started in November 1949, and it continues even today (75 years later!) in the form of the Volkswagen Transport “T6” (sold in select markets around the world). From the 1960s until the 1980s, the “Type 2” was the version of Bus that started becoming a familiar sight.
The Pick of the Day is a 1975 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Houston, Texas. (Click the link to view the listing)
“This VW Bus has been recently fully-restored in Brazil and imported to Texas,” the listing says.
The T2 was inarguably one of the most recognizable from the Bus’ colorful history. Production took place in West Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, and South Africa. It is no wonder these vehicles were seen around the globe in so many countries. Today, they have a strong collector community following. You are bound to find a Bus club in your region; for example, the Arizona Bus Club meets on the third Thursday of every month and has over 4,000 followers on Facebook.
Our featured blue and white two-tone Bus originated in the Brazilian market, and according to the listing, it was overhauled both cosmetically and mechanically prior to importation to the United States. Following were some of the items addressed on the checklist:
- Bodywork and paint
- New ragtop
- New safari windows
- New luggage racks and ladder
- New interior and upholstery
- Rebuilt engine
- Rebuilt transmission
- New tires
- New suspension
With a list like that, this nearly-50-year-old collector vehicle is sorted enough to be ready for the street or show. Its interior is accessed by barn-style doors on the passenger side, and the upholstery is still covered with protective plastic. One of my favorite attributes of this Type 2 is its open-air cabin theme: There are eight windows lining the upper roof sides (in addition to the pull-back sunroof). For a sunny-day cruise, this would be the perfect ride to take you to the beach or to the park for a picnic.
The listing includes a video that starts out with a slide show and then proceeds to give an inside-and-out visual tour. The asking price is $44,800.
