AutoHunter Spotlight: 1963 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible

A fine reason why Pontiac was #3 in sales

-

Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1963 Pontiac Bonneville convertible. This Poncho is powered by a 389 Trophy V8 with Tri-Power upgrade paired with a Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmission. Features include bucket seats, AM/FM radio, woodgrain dashboard trim, and more. Finished in red with white convertible top over a two-tone red vinyl interior, this 1963 Bonneville comes with convertible top boot, original intake, records, owner’s manual, and clear title.

The first three places in sales were traditionally held by Chevrolet, Ford, and Plymouth. But so great was Pontiac’s trajectory (especially after the “Wide-Track” 1959s) that it moved into the third spot in sales, something that would last through the decade. It’s not difficult to see why: strong styling and a sporty image went a long way in car-crazy America where the youths were taking over popular culture.

The Grenadier Red (code 923) paint was stripped and refinished under prior ownership. Features include Bonneville-specific brightwork, driver-side mirror, rocker moldings, and dual exhaust system.

Steel 14-inch wheels with wheel covers are wrapped in Remington Cushion-Aire Poly-4 whitewall bias-ply tires.

The interior features two-tone red vinyl front bucket seats and console with transmission shifter. Amenities include a factory AM/FM radio, Pontiac-branded floor mats, power steering and brakes, and woodgrain dashboard trim.

Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, clock, gauges for the fuel level, voltage, and manifold vacuum. The odometer reads 23,368 miles, though the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The reportedly numbers-matching 389 V8 has been upgraded with Tri-Power carburetion, chrome valve covers, and quick-disconnect battery setup. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a console-shifted Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic.

The suspension consists of an independent front setup and a solid rear axle. Power-assisted braking is provided by four-wheel drums.

The auction for this 1963 Pontiac Bonneville convertible ends on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at 12:15 p.m. (PDT)
