Pick of the Day: 1988 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

Rare ragtop F-body from American Sunroof Company

-

American Sunroof Company (ASC) launched in 1965 and was headquartered in Warren, Michigan. The company partnered with many auto manufacturers over the years on building special varieties of otherwise common vehicles. In 2004, the company’s name was changed to American Specialty Cars, and in 2017, all operations were shut down. But during ASC’s over-50-year lifespan, one of the vehicles it engineered was a convertible variant of the Chevrolet Camaro.

The Pick of the Day is a low-mileage 1988 Chevrolet Camaro convertible listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Lamont, Alberta. (Click the link to view the listing)

“This is a Canadian car with just under 19,000 kilometers (11,800 miles),” the seller states. “It has had one complete repaint in the original bright red and metallic silver due to clear coat peeling on the edges. There is absolutely no rust on the body and has had no accidents reported.”

This Camaro comes from the muscle car’s third generation which rode on the General Motors F-body platform that was shared with the Pontiac Firebird. The body style was first introduced in 1982 and ran for a decade. One of the unique highlights of this generation was that a convertible was reintroduced (albeit in relatively low numbers) after a long hiatus thanks to efforts from ASC beginning in 1987.

That brings us to this high-option, low-mileage convertible from the following model year. Its red cloth interior is a nice complement to the body, and the car came factory-equipped with power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, and an AM/FM radio.

Powering this F-body is a 305cid “Tuned-Port Injected” (TPI) small-block V8 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain was good for 190 horsepower, and “It starts, runs, drives, and stops like a new car and has no mechanical issues at all,” the seller says. The Cooper Cobra Radial G/T raised-white-letter tires were reportedly installed within the last 500 kilometers.

“This Camaro is located just outside of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It has been in this area its whole life and never winter driven,” the listing concludes.

Even though ASC has been gone for many years, its legacy will live on in cars such as this Camaro. The seller is asking $18,500 or best offer.
