Pick of the Day: 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback

A performance-built Sapphire Blue pony car among Utah’s red rocks

-

There are over 30,000 vehicles listed for sale on ClassicCars.com, but one listing in particular jumped out at me when scrolling this week. Without even clicking the thumbnail to view the listing, I thought, “That’s Snow Canyon State Park.” The background in the photos was unmistakable, and it’s a location I’ve also used for shooting automotive photography. This seller had the right idea!

The Pick of the Day is a 1969 Ford Mustang listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in St. George, Utah. (Click the link to view the listing)

“This 1969 Mustang Fastback is a gorgeous example of a tasteful custom build with very low miles since completion,” the listing begins.

The original Mustang two-door pony car saw year-over-year changes following its introduction in the mid-1960s. Beginning in 1969, the body length was stretched by almost four inches and width increased by almost an inch. For the first time, the car used quad headlights, and the side body panels were shaped in a convex fashion as opposed to the prior car’s concave layout. This all made for a car with more significant presence, although its weight went up correspondingly.

This 1969 fastback (or, in Ford speak, “SportsRoof”) has been redone with proper restomod treatment – starting under the hood: Power for this Mustang comes from a 347cid stroker V8 that has been performance-upgraded with a Comp cams camshaft, aluminum heads, and a Holley Sniper fuel-injection system with an in-tank fuel pump. Torque is delivered to the rear wheels through a C4 three-speed automatic transmission, and a nine-inch limited-slip rear end. The seller says that the car “sounds incredible and drives really nice.”

Additional modern appointments include four-wheel disc brakes, Vintage Air climate control, and Foose five-spoke wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich tires.

As for Snow Canyon State Park, this 7,400-acre landscape is in southwestern Utah just outside St. George. It was established as a state park in 1958 and is part of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. As one would expect from a name like that, the sandstone rock formations are laid out in vivid red and white stratified layers. Best of all, there’s a two-lane road cutting right through the center of the canyon with some great curves. The setting is especially dramatic during morning and evening lighting conditions.

“The Sapphire Blue paint is electric and absolutely pops in the sun. There are too many details to list,” the listing concludes.

The asking price is $69,000 for this modified Mustang. If you fly into Utah and buy it, be sure to drive through Snow Canyon State Park. You won’t regret it!
