Interesting Finds: 1971 Volkswagen “Canna-Bus” Transporter

Cheech & Chong-themed bus is legal in all 50 states

-

Many folks younger than Baby Boomers may be too young to remember Cheech & Chong, but their fame transcends generations, possibly due to “Up in Smoke” being one of the best VHS “Afterschool Specials” ever created (don’t ask me how I know). And when it comes to the wacky tobacky, no vehicle resonates more with that lifestyle than the Volkswagen Transporter.

Spotted at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale 2023 auction was a mobile homage to the two comedians and their favorite plant. Technically the vehicle is a 1971 Volkswagen Transporter, but it has been rechristened the Canna-Bus (for you squares, a play on “cannabis”).

Powered by a 1600cc flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission, this VW bus was restored in 2020 and features plenty of nifty details — weed-inspired and otherwise — like hand-painted lettering, faux marijuana plants, smoke machine (with authentic essences), props like “High Times” magazine, tons of stickers on the backlite, and more. It sold for 20,900, which is a smokin’ deal if there ever was one.

Join “Jalopy Jeff” Sutton as he does his best not to inhale while giving you the specifics on this Vee-Doobie.

Diego Rosenberg
Lead Writer Diego Rosenberg is a native of Wilmington, Delaware and Princeton, New Jersey, giving him plenty of exposure to the charms of Carlisle and Englishtown. Though his first love is Citroen, he fell for muscle cars after being seduced by 1950s finned flyers—in fact, he’s written two books on American muscle. But please don’t think there is a strong American bias because foreign weirdness is never far from his heart. With a penchant for underground music from the 1960-70s, Diego and his family reside in the Southwest.
