Legends of the Autobahn 2022

A photo essay of a great event

-

Monterey Car Week is filled with some of the world’s most amazing cars. It’s where you can find yourself surrounded by everything from McLaren F1s and Ferrari 250 GTOs, vintage Bugatti and Alfa Romeos, to almost every example of the Porsche 911. Each of the shows that make up Monterey Car Week feature so many high-end cars that it sometimes seems that standard cars have no place to go.

Of the myriad of events held during the week, there is one show that caters to the highest end of German cars; Legends of the Autobahn.

This was the third year in a row I have attended the event and each has been held at a different venue, but this year it was at the Pacific Grove Links, in Pacific Grove, California. Of the three I have been to this was the best location, and hopefully the town of Pacific Grove also enjoyed hosting the event so we can see a return there in 2023.

If you have never been to Legends, it is an event that is open to all German cars other than Porsche. The inclusiveness is seen throughout the event with hundreds of German cars everywhere.

Some of the top cars on display this year were a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, a BMW M1, and a trio of historic Audi racing cars. These cars were wonderful to see up close, but the best part of Legends is that if you have a scruffy BMW E9 coupe or high mile 450SL you are just as welcome as the star cars.

The entire feel of this event is the definition of welcoming. I saw just as many people swarming around the 300SL Gullwing as I did the rusty BMW E9 coupe. The people who run Legends are the very definition of welcoming.

Star cars were on display at Legends, with the two highlights for me being the brand-new M4 CSL that BMW brought to the show and the trio of Audi racing cars. Another highlight was an early production grey BMW 1600 that had received an amazingly good restoration.

If you have yet to attend Legends of the Autobahn in Monterey and love German cars you should add it to your calendar. It is one of the most fun and affordable events held during the week.

How affordable? Well spectators are free. To display a car it was only $25 this year and that’s really the way to go to feel a part of the event.
