Pick of the Day: 1972 Ford F-250 pickup truck in classic ‘sleeper’ guise

A tweaked Mustang 5.0-liter V8 boosts performance for stock-looking truck

-

Sometimes a classic vehicle is more than meets the eye.  The Pick of the Day is a performance-minded “sleeper” 1972 Ford F-250 being advertised by a private seller in Charleston, South Carolina, on ClassicCars.com.

Beneath the hood of this F-Series pickup beats the heart of a 5.0-liter Mustang, complete with upgraded components for the heads, ignition system, fuel system, cooling system and more.  If it weren’t for the subtle 5.0 emblems on the front fenders, this might be taken as a nice-original everyday Ford work truck.

The seller describes the build specifications in the classified ad: “Brand new Mustang V8 5.0 blueprint engine, 306cid crate, aluminum heads and roller cam, bored .040” over.”

Enhancements to the powerplant also include a Hyperspark ignition system, a Holley fuel pump and a Ford Racing air filter.  Power is transferred to the rear via a remanufactured BMI C6 three-speed automatic transmission, all of which means this truck has a fully sorted powertrain.  The replacement motor even carries a 50,000-mile warranty.

The fifth-generation of Ford’s F-Series pickups launched in 1967 with a 3-inch wider cab when compared to prior models. Unique exterior treatment included the grille, moldings and body lines, with available trim levels in Base, Custom and Custom Cab.

This Ford Custom example from the final year of the generation received a repainted two-tone color scheme Calypso Coral and Wimbledon White as part of a 2017 restoration, per the seller.  Goodyear tires and chrome-finished wheels were added, and the swing-away tow mirrors and receiver hitch mean this truck also can be put to work, in addition to simply looking good.

Interior appointments were addressed as part of the Ford’s build, with reupholstered two-tone bench seating, three-point seatbelts, Dakota Digital gauges, and a Bluetooth-enabled modern audio system.  A dash-mounted Holley Sniper EFI readout delivers data on the 5.0 performance powertrain up front.

“This truck is restored and ready for the right owner to take it to shows, and more importantly, enjoy driving it,” the listing states.

There probably aren’t very many roughly 50-year-old vehicles out there with an engine warranty, so this truck could be the perfect classic for someone who wants a turnkey, reliable cruiser.

The seller is asking $27,995 or best offer for this Ford powerhouse pickup.

  1. Sleeper? Hardly.. these trucks need low rpm torque, not high rpm horsepower. A stock 360FE much preferred…. Beautiful truck in great colors [however. Given its locale, rust always a concern. Can’t tell if this has A/C…

  2. Brings back some very good memories for me – my dad bought a brand new Ford F250 “camper special” in the spring of 1972. A couple of weeks later, my parents bought a new 10′ truck camper. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 8 year old at the time. So many fond memories of camping with my parents.
    Very cool, thanks for posting!

  3. Hey, I’m the buyer – It’s now at it’s new home is in Comanche Texas. Pete did a great job on his end of the restoration – the paint is incredible – starts and runs like a dream. (Pretty loud though 🙂 I will garage it most of the time but will also show it when my schedule permits. It will also pull a two horse trailer at times gonna paint the trailer in matching colors 🙂
