Check out this 1968 Mercury Cougar with the XR-7 trim up for auction on AutoHunter. It’s powered by a rebuilt 351cid Cleveland V8 factory rated at 300 horsepower and paired with a 4-speed manual transmission.
View the video below to hear the engine run and see a walkaround tour of the Cougar:
This first-generation Mercury Cougar has undergone an older restoration and a coat of metallic green paint. The body features a hood scope similar to the scoop found on the Dan Gurney XR7-G option package for the 1968 model year and the factory-correct ‘electric shaver’ front grille.
The interior houses black bucket seats, an aftermarket steering wheel with wood rim, and new green carpet.
The seller notes the rebuilt engine has fewer than 1,000 miles on it, and the odometer shows 83,381 miles.
This Mercury Cougar’s auction ends May 17 at 11:40 a.m. PDT.

I like the name of the grille. A service station neext to my house just got rid of basically the same care but it had>>>>> A factory 32 Valve engine?! << That had to be a pretty special car. It was a basket case / mess, but to a Ford lover.
Never came with a 351 C 302 390 or maybe 428!
1968 XR-7’s came with a 302 2bbl std or could opt for a 4 bbl version. Mine has the 4bbl, PDB, tilt-away wheel, factory AC, automatic, and console. It was born at the San Jose plant and stayed in CA until my purchase in 2013 – longest I have ever owned an antique car by far!! I have a 3 inch binder FULL of 1st gen Cougar literature on top of ALL the orig paperwork for this car including the window sticker!!!
