Car movie of the day: ‘Cannonball Run’

-

Editor’s note: Car guys, and even car girls, can take only so much of those Hallmark holiday movies that fill the airwaves and cable systems this time of year. As an automotive alternative, we’re offering our own suggestions of our favorite car movies for your viewing pleasure. Check out more of our favorite car movies here.

Smokey and the Bandit star Burt Reynolds and director Hal Needham were reunited to make Cannonball Run, a 1981 film about an outlaw road race that begins in Connecticut and ends in California.

The film is crazy and just a blast to watch. Instead of the iconic Pontiac Firebird Grand Am, Reynolds drives a souped-up Dodge Tradesman ambulance. Other cars include a Mercedes 280 SEL sedan, a Ferrari 308 GTS 1979, a Lamborghini Countach and a Subaru GL.

Keep a close eye on the Subaru driver. Recognize him? That’s Jackie Chan in his second Hollywood role.

Cannonball Run is zany and entertaining, especially as different race crews concoct schemes to outwit each other and law enforcement alike. You won’t see the winner coming.
