Barrett-Jackson countdown: 1999 Shelby Series 1

-

Lot No. 739 has the distinction of being an example of the first and only car built from the ground up as a Shelby by Shelby American and Carroll Shelby himself.

Only 249 of the cars were produced. This one is No. 34, but is one of about 60 equipped with the supercharger package that offered a 4.0-liter V8 capable of making 450 horsepower.

Each component was designed specifically for the car, including the modified Oldsmobile Aurora engine, which is paired with a custom ZF 6-speed manual gearbox.

The extruded aluminum frame has honeycomb reinforcement panels and was covered in carbon fiber and laminate body panels -– the first time the technique was used in an American car.

Several other Shelby-sourced and installed extras -– such as a heavy-duty clutch, 4-wheel disc brakes and painted Le Mans stripes –- were added. It also has power steering, brakes, windows, locks and mirrors and a Shelby 5-spoke aluminum wheel.

The car has less than 10,00 miles on it.

Barrett-Jackson’s annual Las Vegas auction is scheduled for September 27-29 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
