The Monterey Peninsula isn’t the only place the automobile and its role in American life is being celebrated this weekend. In the Detroit area, it’s Woodward Dream Cruise weekend.

“So many special life moments that create lasting memories are connected to cars,” McKeel Hagerty, chief executive of Hagerty, the classic car insurer and value tracker, was quoted in a news release.

“We wanted to find a way to rekindle those memories for couples who love their cars almost as much as they love each other.”

So Michigan-based Hagerty set up a drive-in vow renewal center along Woodward Avenue and more than 150 classic car owners and their spouses took advantage of the opportunity to renew their vows of love for each other — and in some cases for their cars.

Hagerty provided veils, bowties, cupcakes, sparkling apple cider and a certificate of renewal to mark the occasion. Among those taking part were Gordon and Geri Rinschler of Birmingham, Michigan, who did the drive-in renewal in the same 1930 Ford Model A they drove when they were married 47 years ago.

Dressed in full gown and tux and witnessed by their three children and 17-year-old granddaughter, the Rinschlers, who are Dream Cruise regulars, reaffirmed their love, adding “this will certainly be a Dream Cruise to remember!”

The vow renewal event is one of several  Hagerty has hosted to recognize the important role that classic cars play in owners’ lives. Last month, Hagerty hosted a classic car night at a drive-in in the Chicago area as part of the national Classic Car Appreciation Day.

The Woodward Dream Cruise started as a fundraiser for a soccer field in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale in 1995. It has evolved into the world’s largest one-day automotive event, taking place along a 16-mile stretch of one of the Detroit area’s most historic boulevards.

More than 50 charities benefit from the sale of official Dream Cruise merchandise and refreshments.
