Less than two weeks after the last checkered flag flies at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway in northern California, the vintage racing contingent takes the first green flag for the start of the 20th Goodwood Revival in England.
The events, though a continent and an ocean apart, are the pinnacles of vintage circuit racing.
A feature of the Goodwood Revival, scheduled for September 7-8, will be a Revival Winners parade featuring 50 cars that have won Revival races in the past 20 years.
The Revival also celebrates a specific period in racing history and this year it’s 1950s Silverstone in honor of that circuit’s 70th anniversary. Not only will the Goodwood pits be decorated to mimic Silverstone in the ’50s, participants and spectators are asked to dress in period clothing as well.
For 2018, the Revival will include 14 races. Among the features are the Kinnara Trophy for pre-1963 GT cars racing into the sunset on Friday, the Fordwater Trophy event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Jaguar XK120, and the St. Mary’s Trophy, a two-part event with both professional and amateur drivers taking part.
Among the drivers entered is Jenson Button, who in 2009 was the Formula 1 world champion.
The event also will celebrate Jackie Stewart’s 50 years of affiliation with the sponsoring Swiss watch brand.
“I was first invited to drive at Goodwood Motor Circuit by Ken Tyrrell in 1964, to find out whether I had what it took to be a racing driver,” Stewart is quoted in a Rolex news release. “It proved to be an instrumental moment in my life and led to three World (F1) Championships.
“I have since been fortunate enough to see Goodwood Revival evolve into one of the greatest events of its kind. For 20 years it has celebrate the most beautiful cars that have ever been built and it takes me back to the early days of my racing career.”
