Pick of the Day: 2004 BMW Z4 that makes one swear off vintage roadsters

0

I bought a BMW Z4 at the beginning of the pandemic in April of last year. I found it in my neighborhood and bought it from its original owner. I will say that without a doubt, this car has put me off classic roadsters likely forever.

My car is a 3.0i with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and the way the car handles, accelerates and sounds, combined with having a flawless power top, extremely comfortable seats, and a passenger compartment that fits my 6’4” frame with inches to spare, and much improved over my previous BMW Z3, makes me reluctant to ever consider a classic roadster, except maybe a Jaguar XK-SS.

BMW

The BMW has the perfect combination of a vintage driving feel combined with the ease of use of a modern car and is not so bogged down with technology to get in the way of the driving experience.

The Pick of the Day is one of these stunning sports cars, a 2004 BMW Z4 with the 3.0-liter engine and a 6-speed manual transmission being advertised on ClassicCars.com by a dealer in Ross, Ohio.  It’s finished in Bright Red with a beige leather interior.

The seller states that the BMW has covered 94,000 miles from new and describes it as being in great condition with excellent paint and body with none of the usual front spoiler damage or rock chips, and with crystal-clear headlight lenses, something that’s known to fog on the Z4.

The seller adds that this Z4 runs and drives well with no known problems or issues, and all major functions in are working order including the power convertible top and ice-cold AC. The interior is in very clean overall condition, the ad says, with no major wear and no signs of smoking.

BMW

Like my car, this Z4 also features the desirable aluminum interior trim and the factory options, including the Premium Package, dual power seats with driver memory, BMW Bluetooth system, leather interior trim and heated seats.

What is strange about the BMW Z4 is that people seem to forget that even by modern standards, they are very fast cars. The 3.0 inline six produces 225 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque, which is enough for the car to get to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and have a top speed limited to 155 mph, plenty fast enough for a little roadster. When you combine that with its handling prowess, the Z4 is all but unbeatable.

These BMWs a year ago could be bought in this condition for as little as $8,500, but times have changed and people are starting to wake up to the fact that these E85 Z4 cars deliver so much performance that you would have to be a fool to consider buying a used Miata instead.

This BMW is being offered for the market-correct price of $15,995, and it should offer its owner more driving pleasure that any classic British roadster I can think of. Did I mention that it has heated seats?

AutoHunter Spotlight: 1966 MG Midget

0

Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is a 1966 MG Midget.

“This red-over-black 1966 MG Midget roadster is powered by a 1,098cc inline four engine equipped with the original dual SU carburetors and a 4-speed manual transmission,” AutoHunter notes in the listing. “The interior features the original dashboard and door panels and black vinyl bucket seats with white piping.”

The clutch, brake and master cylinders, starter and solenoid were all replaced in August 2021. This engine received a compression test with a result of 150 pounds for each cylinder.

The British roadster rides on 13-inch wire wheels that feature knock-off spinners and the seller states that the Dunlop tires have less than 1,000 miles.

The exterior’s trim was removed and the body, underside of the hood, trunk and door jambs were resprayed red by the previous owner.

Aftermarket seat belts were installed and the vehicle features the original steering wheel and dealer-installed British Motor Corporation AM radio.

The sale of this MG includes an MG driver’s handbook, Haynes repair manual, collector’s guide, maintenance and repair documentation, an uninstalled header panel, and original black tonneau cover.

This MG is located in California with a clear title in the seller’s name and the auction ends on December 13, 2021 at 11:20 a.m. MST.

World-rallying Porsche 356, racing team reach Antarctica for icy trek

2

Extreme endurance racer Renee Brinkerhoff, her Valkyrie Racing team and her globe-trotting 1956 Porsche 356 coupe have arrived at Union Glacier in Antarctica, ready to set off on a 356-mile ice trek that will mark the 7th continent conquered by the driver and her vintage sports car, both 65 years old.

The Antarctica challenge comes after two years of effort and preparation, during which time the Porsche was re-engineered for the treacherous polar drive, and caps off Brinkerhoff’s remarkable story of dedication and stamina; since 2017, she and her 356 have competed on every continent in grueling cross-country racing and rally events.

Renee Brinkerhoff (second from left) and her team at Union Glacier

Brinkerhoff’s team figured that the Porsche has been driven more than 20,000 miles through muddy swamps, deserts, mountains and forests in rally races that included the famed 2,000-mile La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico and the historic 9,000-mile Peking to Paris overland rally.  She started the marathon of events in 2017, racing in La Carrera three years in a row.

She named her effort the Project 356 Worldwide Rally, which also includes an important charity arm called Valkyrie Gives, with the goal of raising awareness of and helping to combat the trafficking and exploitation of women and children.  To donate to Valkyrie Gives, visit the charity website.

“You can’t put a price on the life of one child,” Brinkerhoff said in a Valkyrie Racing news release.  “These are the world’s children and as we look deep inside ourselves, we know they too are our children.

“Child trafficking is a pandemic of its own with another name, and the more education we can provide and the more support we can offer, we can help to end something that should have never begun.”

Porsche
The 356 has been fitted with front skis, rear tractor treads and a large “crevasse bar” up front

The team’s main sponsor is PXG, the golfing research and development company based in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Porsche, which has survived brutal abuse in some of the world’s worst driving conditions, has been fitted with a set of rear tractor treads and front skis attached to a sturdy subframe, along with other modifications deemed necessary for safety and survival by polar explorer Kieron Bradley, who led the engineering of the polar 356.

The Antarctica drive presents unique challenges for the Porsche and the team, and while it was originally planned to drive the 356 on its racing wheels and tires, Bradley determined that success would prove more likely with the purpose-built modifications.  They also include a large “crevasse bar” on the front end to help traverse deep fissures encountered on the ice.

A heavy-duty subframe was created for the running gear

Now in Antarctica during what passes for summer at the bottom of the world, Brinkerhoff will drive with navigator Jason de Carteret, who is a world-record holder in polar exploration and has led more than 50 expeditions, including those to the North and South Poles.

Brinkerhoff is accompanied by seasoned members of Valkyrie Racing, which includes her daughter, Christina, whose current duties are serving as the team’s photographer and historian; a graduate of the University of Southern California film school, she is creating a documentary of the world-record 7-continent initiative.

Also with the team are videographer Neil Carey and service/technical support leader Simon Redhead, who has been with Valkyrie Racing since the beginning.

Classic car shoppers like 1967 model year vehicles

1

The changing demographics and the diversity of interests of the collector car enthusiast might be showing in our monthly report on searches by visitors to the ClassicCars.com marketplace. Among the top 20 searches done in November by year, make and model, six of those vehicles are from the 1967 model year.

Not only are that specific year’s vehicles drawing more interest in recent months, but the vehicles involved include the Ford Mustang, the Pontiac GTO, and the Chevrolet Impala, Chevelle and Camaro.

Speaking of the Camaro, the 1969 model year Camaro has moved up to second on the most-searched list, trailing only the Mustang from that same model year.

The Monkeymobile was a 1967 Pontiac

“These days, it seems that it could be anything from a song that mentions a specific car from 1967 to a movie or television show that features cars from that era that triggers renewed popularity,” said Andy Reid, our East Coast editor and collector car market analyst.

“Personally, I love the 1967 Camaro best of all as it was the first example of the model and has a number of 1967-year-only features. It has always been my choice for first-generation Camaros to buy.”

1969 Chevrolet Camaro

We also track searches by generic model rather than by specific year. That list continues to be topped, in order, by Chevrolet, Ford, Mustang and the Chevy C10 pickup truck.

The Buick Grand National has been fifth most popular for the past two months.

Also being shown recent attention is the Ford F100 pickup series. On the other hand, the Volkswagen bus/van has been dropping down the list in recent months, falling outside the top 20 in November for the first time in the past two years.

“The VW van drop in popularity is not too surprising,” Reid added. “These are vehicles that in their day were terrific and offered great utility and in the past 8 or so years offered a hefty dose of nostalgia to people who grew up in the 1960s.

“As a classic vehicle to drive today they are less than wonderful, having limited power, few amenities, and to me are just not that fun to get behind the wheel of. Combine that with the large amount of money it takes to properly restore one, and I feel people are just looking elsewhere.

“The F100, on the other hand, is a usable, somewhat fun to drive and relatively inexpensive to repair classic pickup. I owned one that I used to haul a weekend NASCAR stock car around and it was a fun way to arrive at the track.”

Former key RM Sotheby’s staffers launching their own auction company

0

The rumors have been floating through the collector car community for several weeks that a group of key staffers had left RM Sotheby’s and were launching their own auction company, and now they have confirmed with the announcement of the Broad Arrow Group.

“Broad Arrow Group represents the collective vision of its founders to be the best advisor, marketplace and financier for car collectors,” chief executive Kenneth Ahn is quoted in the news release.

Keith Ahn

Ahn had been senior vice president of strategy and corporate development at Sotheby’s before being appointed as president of RM Sotheby’s as part of Sotheby’s acquisition of RM Auctions.

“With an estimated $25 billion worth of collector cars trading hands each year, the collector car industry is complex and highly fragmented with extraordinary amounts of both information and misinformation among participants,” he added. “Broad Arrow Group aims to transform the industry as the preeminent marketplace for collectors and enthusiasts.”

Joining Ahn at Broad Arrow is a long list of former RM Sotheby’s key employees, including Alain Squindo (chief operating officer), Ian Kelleher (chief marketing officer), Donnie Gould (car specialist), Barney Ruprecht (car specialist), Alexander Weaver (car specialist), Maddie Baker (director of client services) and Mike Mortorano (chief administrative officer and general counsel).

Also part of the new company, as of mid-January 2022, is Karsten Le Blanc, who will be chief financial offer. He was managing director of Credit Suisse AG and then headed his own UK-based collector car finance company.

The new auction house will be based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It has yet to announce a date for its first collector car auction, but has said it will do auctions, private sales and offer financial services.

RM Sotheby’s upcoming collector car auctions are scheduled for January 27 in Phoenix, February 2 in Paris, and for March 2022 at the Karl Lagerfeld Estate in Cologne, Germany.

Pick of the Day: Lincoln Mark V by Bill Blass

6

This past summer, the Audrain Automotive Museum in Rhode Island joined with the Newport Historical Society for a dual exhibition featuring classic cars owned by women and women’s fashions and how they were changed by the automobile.

As part of the promotion for those exhibitions, automotive and fashion historians spoke about women and cars, and the former fashion curator at a major American art museum suggested an ideal premise for a museum display or a concours d’elegance class would be the 1977-1979 Designer Series cars from Lincoln.

Ford’s luxury brand worked with Bill Blass, Cartier, Givenchy and Emillo Pucci to create special editions of the Continental Mark V. One such car, a 1979 Lincoln Mark V being advertised on ClassicCars.com by its private seller, is the Pick of the Day.

“Summer 1979 I was with my dad at the Lincoln Mercury dealership in South Lake Tahoe,” the seller reports, “he had ordered a new Bill Blass Continental and we were there to pick it up.  We watched them unload this beautiful Mark V off the truck 42 years ago.

“The car is rust free, it has never been in an accident and the white leather interior seating is really like new without any scratches or wear marks. The interior is complete and in good condition. The paint looks nice and has some blemishes. The bright work shines great and is acceptable.”

For the 1979 model year, the Blass Mark Vs were done in Moondust, a midnight blue metallic shade, and white, with either a white leather interior with midnight blue accents or in midnight blue leather with white accents.

Roofs were white vinyl, either fully covered or carriage style. The Pick of the Day has the full white vinyl roof.

For the 1979 model year, Lincoln produced a few more than 19,000 of what it termed its “Collector’s Series” cars, only 763 were Pucci versions while nearly 9,500 were carried the Cartier trim. There were 6,720 Blass cars, and like the other Designer cars, they were fully loaded with features such as air conditioning, AM/FM/Quadrasonic 8-track audio, cruise control, and power brakes/steering/locks/windows.

Power was provided by Lincoln’s 400cid V8 rated at 159 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque and connected to an automatic transmission with a column-mounted selector lever.

“Our family has enjoyed being the lucky caretakers of this rare and stunning Bill Blass continental for all these years and now it’s time for someone else to enjoy this beautiful piece of automotive history,” the seller reports. “This Lincoln is good looking and it’s in very nice condition it has been well-maintained and works as it should.”

The odometer shows only a few more than 68,100 miles on a car being offered for $16,900. The Lincoln is in Minden, Nevada, just east of Lake Tahoe. To view this listing on ClassicCars.com, see Pick of the Day.

Nissan shoots for the moon, and also shows EV racer concept

0

We reported a few days ago about several new concept cars that Nissan unveiled at its Nissan Futures event in Yokohama, Japan, but those Ambition 2030 concepts were just part of what the automaker displayed.

Also unveiled were the Ayria Single Seater, an electric-powered formula- or Indy-style racing car (more on that below), as well as a lunar rover prototype Nissan developed with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

Nissan has been working since the start of 2020 with JAXA to create a vehicle to traverse the Moon’s surface while conserving limited energy sources.

Nissan lunar rover prototype in testing in the laboratory

Nissan said its lunar program has benefited from the company’s work on mass-market EVs such as the Leaf and on its e-4orce all-wheel-drive technology being introduced in the new Ariya crossover EV that goes on sale in Japan in the summer of 2022.

Nissan said its rover will enable travel over surfaces not previously explored.

Technology from the Ariya also is used on the single-seater.

“At Nissan, we dare to do what others don’t,” design director Alfonso Albaisa is quoted. “With this concept we want to showcase the high-performance potential of the Ariya’s powertrain in a motorsports-inspired package that not only hints at the design and styling of the road car that inspired it, but that also demonstrates a new and efficient EV performance language.

“Acting as a testbed for future technological evolution, this project can help bring excitement from the road to the race track, and also demonstrate Nissan’s expertise in transferring knowledge and technology from the race track to the road.”

The concept not only is based on Ariya design themes, but on Nissan’s participation in Formula E, the electric-powered racing series.

Nissan competes in Formula E not only to race on track, but also to support the development of compelling electric vehicles for customers,” Tommaso Volpe, Nissan global motorsports director, is quoted.

“Our EV programs inform our Formula E program and vice versa, allowing for road-to-track technology transfer as well as track-to-road. The Nissan Ariya Single Seater Concept explores the combination of the all-electric powertrain, dual motors and revolutionary all-wheel drive system of the Ariya with a pure single seat racing chassis — a powerful demonstration of just how thrilling electric vehicles could be.”

How ugly is Mopar’s holiday sweater?

1

We know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but even Mopar labels its logo-bedecked apparel as the “Mopar ugly holiday sweater.” Nonetheless, we’re sure you know some Hemihead who would love to wear one with its Omega M-stacked logos and its 426 Hellephant crate-engine emblems.

If you do, you can order one (or more) from the WearMopar.com or the store.Mopar.com. The sweaters are $66.95 each, and orders totaling $75 or more and placed through December 31 will be shipped for free if you use the promo code “FREEDEC75,” Mopar says.

By the way, the sweaters are available in sizes small to 3X, and they aren’t the only items on Mopar’s holiday gift guide.

If you think the sweater is too hideous to give (or to wear), you might consider the Mopar-branded shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies available for $19.95 and up.

Also offered are vacuum-insulated beverage bottles, a backpack duffel bag, a 2-inch Wrangler lift kit, a pet kennel for the cargo area of a Chrysler Pacifica, car covers, and a RamBar for the bed of a 1500 pickup truck.

This Barbie doll’s car is all grown up

0

After a two-year hiatus, the Los Angeles Auto Show, now rebranded as AutoMobility LA, returned to the LA Convention Center “celebrating Los Angeles unique transportation style and culture,” said Lisa Kaz, show owner and chief executive.

“This is the only time people can see a three-wheeled EV vehicle, an electric flying car, concept customized exotics, pet adoptions, and even a life-size version of the Barbie Extra Car all in one location.”

While strolling the huge Convention Center, I always look for the unique and unusual. I thought those fabulous and classic Porsches and the “Bathtub” show car in the Galpin Ford hall were as good as it gets — until a real show stopper stopped me in my tracks.

Toy version (above and below) is available at Walmart for $30

This car was no child’s toy, nor was it designed for Barbie’s boyfriend Ken.

As you entered the convention center’s West Atrium plaza, there is was, in all of its glittering hot-pink glory, this full-sized electric version of the Barbie Extra Car, built on the platform of the Fiat 500e with its 111-horsepower electric motor delivering 100 miles of range and 147 pound-feet of torque.

The car is an adult-size and operating replica of the toy version sold exclusively at Walmart for $30. The “Extra” in the name traces to the accessories that come with the toy version.

The car was done by Mattel’s Hot Wheels design team using CAD files from the toy version. A foam version was cut on a 5-axis router and was then hand-tooled so molds could be made for the coachwork, which includes wing-shaped doors and star-shaped headlamps in gold.

The car rides on 22-inch rear and 20-inch front wheels which were 3D printed and then painted pink and rainbow hued.

The interior of the convertible is smothered in pink with furry headrests.

I’m told the Barbie Extra Car is a prototype and it is possible that such a vehicle could be made available to fans and collectors should there be enough response.

Pick of the Day: 1967 Ghia 1500 GT, a rare Italian sports coupe

0

Carrozzeria Ghia, the famed Italian coachbuilder that has lent its name to so many exquisite designs, and worked with Chrysler on memorable concept cars and the Mopar-powered Ghia 450 SS, at a certain point in the 1960s decided to produce its own compact sports coupe.

The Pick of the Day, a 1967 Ghia 1500 GT, is one of the scant 846 that were built from 1963 to 1967, despite the company’s initial plan to mass produce the stylish coupe – the carrozzeria’s small size wound up limiting its output.  Just 35 of the 1500 GTs were officially imported to the US, making them rare indeed.

The Ghia was based on the bones of the Fiat 1500 sedan but with swoopy styling from the company’ stylists working under design chief Sergio Sartorelli. The result was highly attractive, in the vein of such Italian stalwarts as Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, with “a long, sloping hood line and dashing fastback profile that terminated in a neat Kamm tail,” according to the Dallas dealer advertising the 1500 GT on ClassicCars.com

“Special detailing abounded in delightfully shaped front fender vents, hidden door handles, and a slender rear bumper that perfectly shapes the rear panel and its simple round taillamps,” the seller states.

ghia

Although the Ghia 1500 GT was originally powered by the Fiat 1.5-liter inline-4, which put out between 67 to 84 horsepower, this coupe was restored with a sturdy replacement engine from Volvo, a 2-liter unit rated at 118 horsepower.

“The replacement motor weighs considerably less than the original motor,” the dealer notes. “A superb and fast car, the extra 40-60hp makes it an exciting drive.”

Aside from the engine upgrade, the Ghia was restored to original spec and stands in excellent condition, the seller says, which the photos with the ad seem to confirm.

“This is an exceptional example, perhaps one of the finest in the world,” the ad says. “The body and frame were blasted, epoxy primed and painted Rosso Corsa by a top-quality paint shop in Bellingham, WA. The Borrani wheels have been powder-coated and new tires were fitted. The headliner, seats and carpet are all fully restored.”

This rare piece of Italian artistry with the Swedish engine would be a huge hit at any Italian car gathering, even though some purists might turn up their noses.

ghia

The seller notes that the Ghia is lower priced than comparable custom-bodied Italian specials, although it’s still fairly substantial at $69,000.  But maybe not so much for such a rare and stylish coupe that could be driven with confidence on any number of tours and rallies.

To view this vehicle on ClassicCars.com, see Pick of the Day.
