Serious about off-roading? Then here’s a Pick of the Day that will take you just about anywhere, as well as being a genuine piece of American history dating back to World War II.
The 1941 Dodge WC3 Power Wagon was built by Chrysler for Uncle Sam during preparations for U.S. involvement in the war. Durable four-wheel-drive Power Wagons were key to victory in the ground war, rating right up there with the Army Jeep in its importance to the Allied cause.
This Power Wagon has been totally restored to its original military fettle, with such details as an outside-mounted spare, dual jerry cans and a GI shovel mounted to the bodywork, according to the Concord, North Carolina, dealer advertising the Dodge on ClassicCars.com.
“Inside, this Dodge reminds you it’s a true military machine with its simple and hardy setup,” the dealer says in the ad. “A grippy steel wheel, long gear sticks and hardy bucket seats mean you can take on the elements. You even have the original instruction plates that advise on shifting the gears and engaging four-wheel drive.
“And while this is built for pure function, one very handy upgrade is the set of Dolphin gauges. That way you can accurately know what’s going on at all times.”
The half-ton truck is powered by its original 230cid inline-6 engine fed through a 4-speed transmission and 2-speed 4X4 transfer case, with low gearing for creeping over the most challenging rock-crawling adventures. The truck has been converted to a 12-volt electrical system with alternator for reliability, and a set of conventional wheels are provided for mounting less-aggressive tires for everyday use.
“This anvil-tough motor provides genuine stump-pulling torque,” the ad says. “So we bet it will have your mind thinking about all the uses you could have for this classic.”
The restoration was completed just 80 miles ago, the dealer says, but the Power Wagon should hardly be regarded as a trailer queen. It’s a rough-and-ready piece of equipment for tackling the boondocks.
Despite its capabilities, historic value and apparently immaculate condition, the Dodge is priced at just $26,900.
Or, as the dealer notes: “Something so memorable, significant, and complete is rarely this affordable.”
