Rancher, firefighter and vehicle collector John Lewis’s collection of some 100 pre-war vehicles — many of them trucks and fire engines — will be offered for sale at a VanDerBrink Auctions event on October 21 in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Everything on the docket is being offered at no reserve, the auction house noted.
Lewis, a firefighter turned electrical contractor, traveled the country collecting cars but especially trucks, buses and even hearses. With his wife, Jane, he opened the Lewis Fire, Transportation and Farm Museum in 1986. Lewis died in 2013.
Cars in the collection include a 1914 Ford Model T speedster, 1926 Model T doctor’s coupe, and a 1924 single-door roadster; 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom III town limousine and 1934 Phantom II Landaulet; 1914 Studebaker touring car; pre-war Nashes; 1918 Dodge J.E. touring car; and a 1928 Dodge victory 6 sedan.
But trucks are the featured lots, ranging from Model T-based units to a 1926 Dodge-Graham pickup, 1914 and 1918 REO Speedwagons, 1918 International, 1921 International gravel truck, 1933 International Omaha Standard bed/hoist, and several early White and Mack trucks.
Firefighting units include a 1920, 1927 and 1930 REOs, 1915 White, and several American LaFrance vehicles, ranging from a 1922 fire truck to a 1956 Model K ladder truck, as well as pre-war units from Sayers & Scovill, Sterling, Oshkosh and Coleman.
The collection also includes several hearses.
