Too much can be a good thing, as Mecum Auctions recently demonstrated by expanding its Orlando, Florida, auction with an addition day because of an overabundance of collector vehicle consignments.

Originally planned as a three-day event, the second Summer Special sale will be held July 28-31 with about 1,000 cars, trucks and motorcycles expected to cross the auction block at the Orange County Convention Center, where the sale will be held in air-conditioned comfort.

Mecum is returning to central Florida following its record-setting Kissimmee auction in January, when $141 million in sales was reached.

The Dodge Daytona was driven by a country-music star

“Among the featured lots consigned to date is a 1969 Dodge Daytona NASCAR that was driven by country-music legend Marty Robbins at the National 500 in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1970,” the auction company said in a news release.

“Re-discovered in 2005, the car had a rotisserie restoration completed by Ray Evernham’s Big Iron Garage before being unveiled to the public at the 50th anniversary of the Aero Wars, hosted by Tim Wellborn at the Talladega Speedway.”

Another star car at Mecum is a 1969 Camaro RS Z28 302/290-horsepower that has won a number of prestigious awards since its rotisserie restoration.  Among its honors, the coupe is one of 26 1969 Z28s to receive the Legend Award from the American Camaro Association, the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals Concours Gold Certificate, 4-time Chevy VetteFest Gold Spinner, 6-time Super Chevy Auto Star and 2-time AACA Senior winner.

The 1942 Lincold Zephyr coupe is a rare survivor

A rare pre-war classic making an appearance at Mecum is a V12-powered 1942 Lincoln Zephyr 3-window coupe, one of just five known to exist.  Beautifully designed with an evocatively long, sloping rear roof and trunk, the Zephyr has been driven just 85,000 miles and comes with a matching set of period luggage.

Also scheduled to be at the sale is a “one-of-one” 1987 Porsche 930 Turbo Slantnose that was custom built by Porsche’s Special Wishes program and includes a rare factory power kit. It is equipped with a 3.3-liter flat-6 engine and 4-speed manual transmission.

A 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 is another featured muscle car. The fastback has been professionally restored in Grabber Blue, is equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission and driven just 7,745 miles.

The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette split-window coupe is a sports car icon

As with most Mecum auctions, Chevrolet Corvettes will be plentiful in Orlando, with the special consignments including a 1958 roadster, a 1963 split-window coupe and a 2020 3LT convertible that is the final Corvette produced for that model year.
