Goodwood cancels Festival of Speed and Revival for 2020

-

In this age of the coronavirus pandemic, virtual car shows have replaced those we’ve enjoyed for so many years, those held on weekends in parking lots or maybe even on a golf course fairway, where you could wander and admire, even get a peek under a hood or two.

With the temporary hiatus of Monterey Car Week, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is staging a virtual facsimile with a variety of events available online in August.

The latest to join the lineup are Concorso Italiano and our own Virtual Future Collector Car Show. Both shows will feature vehicle video provided by car owners.

For entry details, visit the Petersen’s Concorso Italiano and Future Collector Car Show websites.

ACD Festival is a go

While so many in-person events have been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, there are some that are scheduled to take place. With the proviso that plans are subject to change depending on state and local health guidelines, organizers of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival have assured the local kcpnews.com outlet that the 64th annual ACD Festival is a go for August 29-September 5 in the northeastern Indiana community of Auburn.

The event will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Auburn Car Company as well as “Women Behind the Wheel.”

“The 2020 ACD Festival may be different in some respects this year as we remain mindful of the current climate, but will remain the quality classic car celebration and family-friendly event that attendees have enjoyed for 64 years,” festival board president Mike Boswell told kcpnews.

Meanwhile, the festival website notes that a complete schedule will be posted soon.

Goodwood festivals canceled for 2020

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon has announced the cancelation for 2020 of the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival. Both events already had been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

He also announced the revival of the Goodwood Supporters’ Association, originally founded 25 years ago “to help overcome a seemingly insurmountable challenge – bringing racing back to Goodwood Motor Circuit.”

However, he added, “The challenge we face today is very different, but perhaps even more serious, as it threatens the future of the entire estate. Bringing people together to enjoy the things they love is fundamental to everything we do at Goodwood, so social distancing is having a catastrophic impact on all areas of our business. It is a worrying time, in the face of which we are doing what we can to salvage a future for our events.

“We have, of course, placed the safety of our customers and staff above all else, but now we begin to face the implications of the ‘new normal’ as the government attempts to balance the demands of health and the economy. We are hoping that we may be able to keep the flame alive with a ‘behind closed doors’ motorsport occasion in the autumn, for everyone to enjoy at home, but in terms of business the most this will do is limit damage.

“We count on our headline events to generate all of our operating profit, and their absence has left us with millions in overheads to pay and no income since March, placing not only future events but even the long-term survival of the estate under considerable strain. It is therefore my hope that, with the renewal of the GSA, you may consider standing beside us as we weather this storm.”

London to Brighton announcement coming in July

Organizers of the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run say they will make an announcement about the fate of their annual November event sometime in July.

“The health and safety of the participants and all those needed to stage the event is our primary concern,” said Royal Automobile Club chairman Ben Cussons. “Delaying the decision will allow us to monitor the situation and develop our plans according to Government advice. We sincerely hope that travel and hospitality will resume, thus enabling enthusiasts from around the world to celebrate the World’s oldest motoring event.

“We are looking at a range of options and are determined to commemorate the 1896 Emancipation Run in one way or another, ideally with the traditional drive from London to Brighton.”

The annual event remains tentatively scheduled for November 1.

  1. The Goodguys have announced that officials in Ohio did not approve the staging of the 23rd PPG Nationals in Columbus this weekend. Instead, the 2020 event season will relaunch July 3-5 at Des Moines, Iowa, with the 29th Speedway Motors Heartland Nationals.
