Ioniq 5 Disney100 Platinum Edition celebrates the centennial

-

In a co-branding opportunity no one saw coming, Disney and Hyundai have teamed up to produce the Ioniq 5 Disney100 Platinum Edition. And if you have yet to be blindsided, you may rub your eyes and shake your head when you learn that it will be unveiled on the October 17, 2023, airing of “Dancing with the Stars.”

Truth be told, if you were paying attention, you may have seen this coming thanks to a concept car reveal at the 2023 New York International Auto Show. Of course, 2023 marks 100 years of Disney. While Walt was born in 1901, his company is currently celebrating its centennial.

“We’re thrilled to be unveiling the Ioniq 5 Disney100 Platinum Edition during ‘Dancing with the Stars’,” says Angela Zepeda, the chief marketing officer for Hyundai Motor America. “Disney100 night is the perfect opportunity to showcase this first-of-its-kind collaboration between Disney Imagineering and an auto manufacturer. It’s going to be a magical night filled with iconic music and great dancing, and we couldn’t think of a better way to extend our Disney100 partnership.”

I have to admit that, as a guy who’s not into EVs, the Ioniq 5 is a sharp-looking vehicle, offering equal parts brave design vibes and 8-bit elements. I would love to see Hyundai snag the equity of this vehicle and use it towards something more car-like and see where it goes but, considering the Ioniq 6 sedan, I don’t get the idea that’s the direction in which Hyundai is heading.

Here’s what the Ioniq 5 Disney100 Platinum Edition includes:

–Gravity Gold Matte exterior color
–Disney-inspired wheel styles
–Disney100 Platinum exterior badging
–Disney100 logo embossed on front seat headrests and center console
–Disney100 logo on the floormats
–Disney-inspired front and rear door trim strip
–Disney-themed intro on the interior screen upon turning the car on which features iconic Disney music, the
Disney100 logo, and pixie dust

Sales of the 1,000 examples earmarked to be built will begin early in 2024.

“Disney’s collaboration with Hyundai on the Ioniq 5 Disney100 Platinum Edition demonstrates the close, creative partnership between our two brands,” says Andrew Messina, SVP of Sales. “As we celebrate 100 years of The Walt Disney Company, we continue to showcase our power as a leader in live content and how brands can be a part of something wonderful alongside us.”

Though his first love is Citroen, he fell for muscle cars after being seduced by 1950s finned flyers—in fact, he’s written two books on American muscle. But please don’t think there is a strong American bias because foreign weirdness is never far from his heart. With a penchant for underground music from the 1960-70s, Diego and his family reside in the Southwest.

  1. The whole ridiculous EV push is political. Global interests do not want folks driving freely across the country but want to keep them within the village. This coupled with the false premise that gasoline cars are hurting the earth. Disney, I agree with Charlie and do not support them.

    • NEWSFLASH! The transportation needs of the rest of the world is not like yours. Nowhere in our story is politics present, so no need to inject it here.

  2. I currently have (no pun intended) 4 ICE vehicles and will be adding a fully electric vehicle soon. So far as I’m concerned, if it has wheels and is fun to drive, I’m on board.

  3. Diego, unlike the bitter commenters, I do kinda like this. Kinda. The color of the interior is brilliant. The idea is timely.
Would I give up a lifted, built LS6 2004 Tahoe with the desired “barn doors”, 20″ Hankook all season tires, plow kit w/Boss V-plow, 7500# Reese hitch, and all the “stuff” to survive a North Dakota winter?
No. It’s a nice thing, though.
