Acura confirmed it is developing a high-performance Integra Type-S for the 2024 model year. The Acura Integra Type-S is going to be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter VTEC four-cylinder engine producing more than 300 horsepower paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. Yes, the Integra Type-S will be manual-only.
The all-new, Civic-based 2023 Integra was revived this year after being mothballed in 2006. Its current guise is a five-door hatchback powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter VTEC four-cylinder engine that produces a factory-rated 200 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. The 2023 Integra is available with a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission.
The Integra was one of the original models available when the Acura brand was launched in the U.S. in 1986 as a four-door sedan or three-door liftback.
Acura needs the Integra Type-S in its stable. The current Integra is a very bland offering that gives off all the intrigue of a Honda Civic with nicer interior appointments. Mundane is the best word I can use when I’ve crossed paths with a ’23 Integra. There is no flavor or intrigue — just another boring sedan that could be confused with a myriad of offerings from rival manufacturers.
I was underwhelmed when early photos of the Integra began circulating online. It didn’t convey excitement, passion or any strong emotional reactions but, as a Honda product, I imagine it’s reliable with good gas mileage and excellent trade-in value. Hopefully I’m not coming across like the old head that has way too many nostalgic memories of Acura hatchbacks inspired by “Fast & Furious” movies. To me, the Integra was Acura’s affordable, sporty choice, as the NSX was priced above a lot of tax brackets.
With the NSX going back to pasture, hopefully the new Integra Type-S gives Acura consumers something fun to drive. There are enough boring cars out there, and it’s good to see Acura reviving a name with its previous glory intact.
