NHRA drag racers to be featured at Goodwood Revival

Our weekly roundup for car show news and notes

-

Noting that 2021 marks 70 years since the Festival of Britain and the founding of the National Hot Rod Association, the Goodwood Revival meeting, scheduled for September 17-19, will turn the clock back to 1951. In addition to a miniature Festival of Britain taking place at admission Gate 2, the Revival will feature more than 60 hot rods, including what figures to be the largest display of 1932 Fords in the UK.

“The summer of 1951 saw millions of visitors flock to the Festival of Britain on London’s South Bank, a national showcase of British manufacturing and design, six years after the end of World War II and one hundred years since the Great Exhibition of 1851,” Goodwood said in its news release.

“Promoting British science, technology, industrial design, architecture and the arts, the Festival proved immensely popular as a beacon for change that helped reshape British arts, crafts, designs and sports for a generation.

“To celebrate the occasion, Goodwood will be recreating a slice of that festival atmosphere at Gate 2 of the Motor Circuit. There will be nods to the vibrant colors of the Festival of Britain with colorful ‘lollipops’ throughout the trees and geometric patterns on the buildings, while the famous Hans Tisdall Cockerel mural will also be re-created.

“The area will be a hub of color and entertainment and a helter skelter and Punch and Judy stage will provide entertainment throughout the day.”

But there was more to 1951 than the British Festival, Goodwood notes. “2021 also marks 70 years since Wally Parks founded the National Hot Rod Association in America and Goodwood is hoping to host one of the largest ever gatherings of the mean machines in Europe with the aim of there being one car for every year of the NHRA’s age. This iconic slice of Americana will be celebrated at a relocated Gasoline Alley which will feature bleachers, a mock drag strip, performance stage and dancing.”

Among the cars being showcased are 16 of the Rolling Bones from a hot rod shop in Greenfield Centre, New York. Other clubs taking part include the Low Fliers, the Originals, the Vultures, and the Detonators, of which American racing star Dan Gurney was a member.

Porsche plans big Velocity Invitational display

The Velocity Invitational, scheduled for November 11-4 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, has announced its motorsports and luxury lifestyle event will feature an exhibition of Porsche 917 race cars as well as other historic Porsche models.

The event is being staged by the team behind the Sonoma Speed Festival and says Porsche will be the official sponsor.

“Porsche vehicles have been a dominant force on the track and the street since the original 356/1 first took to the road in 1948,” noted event founder Jeff O’Neill. “Velocity Invitational will highlight some of Porsche’s greatest racing cars on track, while Porsche’s curated showcase of 917 race cars will give guests a rare opportunity to see these engineering wonders up close and in action.”

Five 917s are scheduled to take part, as are several 962 and 962C endurance-racing sports prototypes. Also included are 911 RSRs, Porsche racers from the late ‘60s including 908 and 910 and even cars such as the RSKs and two Abarth Carreras from even earlier periods.

In addition to race cars, the event includes a food and wine pavilion, and Porsche will be offering test drives of its Taycan on the streets of Monterey.

Concours for the Next Generation

The RPM Foundation and the Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance will stage what they’re terming the “Concours For The Next Generation” as part of the South Carolina event this fall by offering eight places on the show field for participants who meet certain criteria:

They must be less than 30 years of age or current automotive students, interns or apprentices, and must own a vehicle produced before 1996 that is ready to be shown and in which they have had “a significant hands-on role in the restoration of at least one major component (such as engine, body, interior).”

13th annual Euro Fest is October 1-2

The 13th annual Renaissance Euro Fest Classic European auto and motorcycle show is scheduled for October 1-2 at Colony Park in Ridgeland, Mississippi. The event is open to vehicles produced at least 25 years earlier, except for a select group of by-invitation special-interest vehicles.

Registration to show a vehicle and spectator admission are free. More than 15,000 people are expected, according to show organizers who also are organizing police-escorted drives to the event for car owners from Memphis and New Orleans.
