Pick of the Day: 1981 Datsun 720, original low-mileage pickup

Relive your ‘80s dreams in this rare and unique King Cab truck

-

The Pick of the Day is a totally unique 1981 Datsun 720 King Cab pickup that maintains its originality, shows only 32,916 miles on the odometer, and is a “wonderful little driver that takes you back in time,” says the Sioux Falls, South Dakota dealer advertising the truck on ClassicCars.com.

“Tough in the rough, easy on the road” is how Nissan advertised its 1981 model year Datsun 720 compact pickup, the successor of the Datsun 620 truck, with its more durable suspension and roomiest cab option yet – the King Cab.

This King Cab is equipped with 2-wheel drive and the GL trim package that gave this ‘80s dream factory air-conditioning, a simple gauge cluster and a Clarion AM/FM radio.

The funky exterior is “finished in white with the factory stripe package which mimics wood grain,” the dealer says.

Power comes from a 2.2-liter inline-4 engine paired with a 5-speed manual and, according to the dealer, the truck “runs and drives wonderfully, shifting through all the gears nicely and tracking down the road straight.”

Its truck bed features a white bed liner, bed rails, rope tie-offs on the side, and a large, embossed Datsun logo on the tailgate accompanied by a “King Cab” emblem on the lower right.

Datsun also gave these 720s faux hood vents and placed the taillights on the lower rear valance – a nod to the former 620 models.

The factory original cab is in “near-new condition finished in a beautiful color of blue that really makes the interior pop,” the dealer adds.  It houses blue-cloth bucket seats with rear jump seats and matching blue carpet, floor mats and dash.

Documentation includes the original radio manual, owner’s manual, factory wiring diagram, original car invoice, pre-delivery inspection form, and emissions warranty booklet with the original owner’s information.

The truck is being offered for $17,712.

  1. A magnificent find and hopefully somebody will enjoy keeping it right.
    It is respectable anyplace.
I am a firm believer in King/Extended cab, suburbs interior and real bed.
Perfect for home/garden center and chores.
Real functional vehicle with Datsun uncommonly outdoing Toyota.
But my wife (who drives chase car) doesn’t drive stick.

  2. I’m older so the 80;s seem like yesterday. I remember these little trucks (Toyota, Datsun, Luv, Courier, etc.) Millions of them, everywhere. The fact that someone wants over $17,000 for one of these ugly little things, shocks me. Just my opinion.
