Bidders battled to pay $289,980 for this 1958 AC Ace | Bonhams photos

It was a lovely 1958 AC Ace roadster and Bonhams expected it to sell for around $140,000 at its Goodwood Members’ Meeting auction this past weekend. But bidders had other figures in mind, including 10 who called in by telephone, boosting the final price for the car to $286,980 and making it the top sale of the auction.

And the Ace wasn’t the only AC that sold well. A 1937 16-horsepower 2-4-6 coupe with Dickey (a British term for a rumble seat) sold for $55,753, triple its pre-auction estimated value. Another AC, a 1964 3000 ME coupe, brought $21,331.

Like the ’58 Ace, two other cars sold for a quarter-million or more — a 1967 Aston Martin DB6 saloon for $261,797 and a 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA for $253,928.

The buyer of the Alfa also bought a spare engine, offered as a separate lot, for $35,552.

“This is a strong opening for our series of three auctions at Goodwood this year,” Tim Schofield, head of Bonhams’ UK motor cars division, was quoted in a news release. “In typical Bonhams style, we offered everything from pre-war British tourers and Italian racers to French voiturettes and American limousines. Many pre-sale estimates were doubled, and in some cases tripled.”
