Marco Halter and Claudia Engelhart in their 1963 Ford Falcon

A 1963 Ford Falcon carrying Marco Halter and Claudia Engelhart edged former Pekin to Paris winners Gerry Crown, who is 88 years old, and Matt Bryson, in a 1974 Leyland P76, to win the Classics division.

On accepting his runner-up trophy, Halter acknowledged the impact of his first major vintage rallying victory. He also turned to Crown and said, “I wish I can drive as fast as you when I’m as old as you. You’re a fast driver, and a fast drinker.”

Halter also praised Karen and David Ayre, who entered the rally in their 1907 Itala, which completed the first 21 days of the event but broke a half shaft and lost a wheel on Day 22.

The Spirit of the Rally award was presented to Russell Jordan and Bill Crossan for their “efforts” in a 1967 Austin Healey 3000 and the Against All Odds honors went to Adrian Hodgson and Eric Sia who had to detour to Kuala Lumpur for major mechanical work on their 1975 Peugeot 504 Ti.

The ERA’s next event is the 10th Flying Scotsman rally, with more than 100 pre-war vehicles scheduled to depart the Brooklands Motor Museum on April 26.

Driveshare boosts Drive Toward a Cure rally

DriveShare, Hagerty’s car-sharing program, is working with organizers of the Drive Toward a Cure’s 2018 California Adventure to encourage more participation.

Launched last year, Drive Toward a Cure raises money for Parkinson’s disease research through road rallies.

The next such rally is scheduled May 3-6 in California and DriveShare has announced that all service fees and profit from any rentals will be donated to the cause.

In a news release, DriveShare by Hagerty has become “the nation’s premiere enthusiasts car rental community, bringing the ‘sharing economy’ into the car-lover’s garage. The program works as a sort of Airbnb connecting owners of classic cars with people who would like to drive them for a day, a weekend, or longer.
