1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk owned by country star Conway Twitty highlights GAA’s November auction

Golden coupe with a famous history is headed to auction

-

GAA Classic Car’s upcoming auction, November 4-6 in Greensboro, North Carolina, features a docket of 650 vehicles available for bidding. Among them is a 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk once owned by country music superstar Conway Twitty.

The car is offered for sale at no reserve.

Studebaker introduced its Golden Hawk, the original performance car for the South Bend, Indiana, automaker, in 1956. The automaker developed this top-of-the-line model from the 1953 Starliner coupe designed by Raymond Loewy.

Starting from the Starliner’s more toned-down shape, the Golden Hawk was given a large egg-crate grille, a raised hood line, a squared-off trunk lid, and prominent tailfins.

This example, noted to have received a complete restoration, is finished in gold with white tailfin cutouts, and a matching gold interior.

The 1956 models were equipped with a Packard 352cid V8, but due to the Packard plant closing that same year, the 1957 models were supplied with Studebaker’s then-new 289cid V8 engine enhanced with a supercharger. This car’s engine specifically is linked to an automatic transmission.

In 2007, this Golden Hawk scored 394 out of 400 points from the Studebaker Drivers Club with one point taken away for having a dirty battery terminal, four points for chips in the paint and one final point regarding hubcap paint.

We learn from documentation supplied by the seller that this Golden Hawk was sold new on New Year’s Eve in 1956 at Spiers Motor Company in Knoxville, Tennessee. The buyer, Robert Wright, traded in his 1951 Studebaker Land Cruiser to purchase this Golden Hawk.

Wright owned the Golden Hawk for 20 years until he sold it to country singer Conway Twitty on June 15, 1989. Twitty restored the car and displayed it in his museum, Twitty City, for several months.

“In the whole world of American popular music only Conway Twitter has had 55 number one records,” GAA Classic Cars notes. “Conway’s 55th hit Crazy in Love went to number one on the charts as recently as December 1990.

‘During the first fifteen years of R&R’s (Radio and Records) country chart histories, this legendary vocalist reigned unchallenged as Top Artist based upon points tallied for the most #1’s, most Top 5 and most Top 10 hits during that time frame.”
