The battle for the off-pavement heavyweight championship of the world between Jeep and Bronco gets its newest contender as Jeep takes the wraps off its 2021 Wrangler Rubicon 392, which it says not only features a 6.4-liter V8 engine rated at 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, but also offers “greater off-road capability with greater approach and departure angles, suspension articulation, maneuverability and water traversing up to 32.5 inches.”

Jeep says the introduction of the 392 (the engine’s size in cubic inches rather than liters) marks the return of a production V8 engine to the Wrangler after a nearly 40-year hiatus.

Standard equipment also includes a paddle-shifted TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission with Trail Rated Selec-Trac 2-speed transfer case and full-time 4-wheel drive, heavy-duty wide-track Dana 44 axles with Tru-Lok electronic-locking differentials and electric front sway-bar disconnect.

The Rubicon 392 also gets upgraded frame rails, a factory-installed 2-inch lift kit, Fox shocks, heavy-duty brakes, and 33-inch tires on 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels.

In other words, you can sprint to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, run a quarter-mile in 14 secods, or take advantage of a 48:1 rock-crawling gear ratio.

A tri-level Hydro-Guide air intake system can cannel 15 gallons of water a minute away from the engine, and there’s a secondary air path built into the hood should the scoop become obscured by mud, snow or debris. For exhaling, the Rubicon 392 comes with active dual-mode exhaust sound capability as well as quad tailpipes.

The steering wheel and seats have been specially designed for such a vehicle. Half-doors are available and the Wrangler Rubicon 392 comes with special bronze exterior accents.

Naturally, Jeep calls it “the most capable, quickest, most powerful Wrangler.”

“This is the most powerful, quickest, most capable Jeep Wrangler we’ve ever built,” said Jim Morrison, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA North America.

“The factory lift and abundant low-end torque from the V-8 makes the Rubicon 392 the king of the hills, whether you’re rock crawling at low speeds or powering up an incline,” said Jim Morrison, head of the Jeep Brand/FCA North America. “And, when pavement replaces dirt, Rubicon 392 makes quick work of the road.”

The vehicle goes on sale in the first quarter of 2021. Pricing was not announced.

  1. I think the author forgot to finish the article with the “second half” update/analysis…. “Jeep Vs. Bronco…” Where’s the Bronco details? Misleading title for an article that’s actually a Jeep advertisement.

  2. I contacted my local Jeep dealer, you can order one as early as January for delivery in April/May. I put myself on the waiting list, so excited!!
