Autohunter Spotlight: 1968 Porsche 912

One family owned and a great starter into classic Porsches

-

Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1968 Porsche 912 coupe. This 912 is powered by a 1600cc flat 4 engine that is backed by an optional Porsche 901 5 speed gearbox.

For those of you who might not know it, my first truly special car was a 1968 Porsche 912 that I bought when I was 16 years old back in the 1980s. The car was everything I had hoped for and more, though it was a pretty poor example and ended up needing new floor pans, which I welded in myself. That 912 was the kickstart to my lifelong love affair with collector cars and became the first of more than 20 Porsche cars I have owned in the years since.

This Porsche 912 is described in the listing as having a rebuilt engine, newer paint, rebuilt Solex carburetors, and an aftermarket third brake light. It is finished in the truly iconic color combination of Guards Red paint over a black vinyl interior, exactly the same as mine was. Of interest is that this nice driver 912 has been with the same family its entire life.

The seller discloses what you want to know when buying a vintage Porsche. The state that the current Guards Red paint was applied in the 1980s in place of the original British Racing Green. They add that the front bumper was repaired in 1992.

There is more info in the auction listing as well. They go on to state that the interior is equipped with black perforated vinyl bucket seats up front and twin seats in the rear, matched to the door panels, padded dash, and carpeting. The materials of the interior are completely correct for a 912 of the era and based on the photos may be a tidy original interior. The car has a leather-wrapped steering wheel, aftermarket three-point seat belts, a Sony AM/FM/CD radio, aluminum dash trim, and vent windows. The seller also adds that rust under the driver’s side of the car was repaired and new metal was welded into place.

The 912 is a wonderful Porsche to own and a great entry point into the world of classic Porsche cars. It has all the styling of the 911 but with an engine that is easy to service yourself, and while not as fast as a 911, it definitely has more balanced handling and is quite forgiving at the limit. If you have always dreamed of a classic Porsche this 912 might be just the ticket to the world of classic Porsche ownership.

The auction for this 1968 Porsche 912 ends on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at 12:30 p.m. (PDT)
