Pick of the Day: 1987 Dodge Shadow Shelby CSX

Shelby saves the day again for underpowered Mopars

-

The 1980s wasn’t the best era for American performance cars, and I am aware this isn’t a hot take but more of a rehashing of automotive history from an underwhelming era. You could still get a V8-powered Corvette, Mustang or Camaro, but horsepower was lower than previous generations and performance was less than stellar. For example, the standard V8 for the 1987 Chevy Camaro Z28 produced an anemic 170 horsepower from 305ci and could go from 0-60 mph in 8.1-seconds.

A couple of months back I wrote an article about the 1986 Dodge Omni GLH-S and how Carroll Shelby’s influence made it into a pretty good hot hatchback. The following year Dodge relied on Shelby again to enhance its products and save the day for Mopar fans.

“The first Shelby CSX (Carroll Shelby eXperimental) was a limited-production high performance car based on the turbocharged intercooled Dodge Shadow,” the listing states. “They were offered by Shelby Automobiles, Inc. from 1987 through 1989. Only 750 were built in 1987.”

This Shelby-influenced Shadow is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled 2.2-liter inline-four engine that produced a factory-rated 175 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 175 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission. An ’87 Dodge Shadow Shelby CSX had a 0-60 mph time of 7.1 seconds, which is a one-second faster than the aforementioned Camaro.

The listing states that it has less than 93,000 miles and, judging by the photos, this Shelby CSX is in good shape throughout. It has an asking price of $16,980, which makes this a good opportunity to own a true Shelby.
