Volkswagen unleashes the Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition

VW will distribute 1,800 to North America

-

Want the fastest Volkswagen this side of Nürburgring? Now you can have it courtesy of the company from Wolfsburg, as VW will be offering Americans and Canadians 1,800 chances of owning the Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition. This is a special Golf R that celebrates 20 years of all-wheel drive Golfs starting with the very first Golf R32 that was introduced in 2002.

“Twenty years is a significant milestone for the R performance brand of models, and we’re excited to share in a global celebration of two decades of R32 and Golf R heritage,” says Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy. “Being the first official worldwide special model for the Golf R, it was important to include our North American Volkswagen performance hatch enthusiasts in this birthday party for the Golf R brand.”

As we reported recently, Volkswagen took the Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition to Nürburgring and ran a time of 7:47.31 minutes, which was a full four seconds faster than the regular Golf R thanks to the turbocharged 315-horsepower EA888 evo4 TSI engine and other tweaks. Interestingly, the North American market is the only region to have the option of a 6-speed manual in addition to the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. You also have a choice in colors: Deep Black Pearl, Lapiz Blue Metallic and Pure White. Interestingly, the mirror caps are finished in Lapiz Blue on Deep Black and Pure White vehicles, while the mirror caps on Lapiz Blue cars are painted gloss black. Puddle lights project “20 R” onto the pavement.

What else makes this special-edition VW different from the usual Golf R? No sunroof, for starters, plus gloss black 19-inch Estoril wheels and 235/35 summer performance tires. Of course, no self-respecting anniversary car would be without blue “R” logos adorning the front and rear bumpers, with 20th Anniversary badges on the B-pillars. Inside, the dashboard and front door trim feature genuine carbon fiber inserts. Sit in the high-bolster seats and you’ll be faced with a race-inspired D-shaped steering wheel with blue “R” logo finished on the steering wheel clasp.

The 20th Anniversary Edition Golf R will hit the streets this fall starting at $44,940 with a manual transmission and $45,740 with the 7-speed DSG.

  1. I’m so beyond little 4 cylinder buzz boxes no matter how much you dress them up, make them loud, and pretend that being cramped and uncomfortable is cool. Let alone overpricing them beyond all reason.
