Lead Writer Diego Rosenberg is a native of Wilmington, Delaware and Princeton, New Jersey, giving him plenty of exposure to the charms of Carlisle and Englishtown. Though his first love is Citroen, he fell for muscle cars after being seduced by 1950s finned flyers—in fact, he’s written two books on American muscle. But please don’t think there is a strong American bias because foreign weirdness is never far from his heart. With a penchant for underground music from the 1960-70s, Diego and his family reside in the Southwest.

  1. I inherited my grandfather’s 1970 Olds Delta 98 Royale in the early 1980s. I always drove smaller cars, Mercury Capri, Ford Pinto & a Mercury LN-7. That Olds was driving on my living room couch. Handled like a tug boat, but it could pull one too!

  2. My Citroën DS was absolutely #1. As their ads said “Driving like God in France”! Unfortunately the car rusted away right under my comfortable behind.

    • Yes, mine was the 72 Citroen SM – the same hydraulic suspension licensed to Rolls – and later others – and the height-adjustable suspension you could raise and/or lower on the fly, and the ‘heart-shaped’ cam on the steering wheel that brought the steering wheel back to dead center, and the articulated and adjustable leather seats, a great car.

  3. My 2003 Cadillac CTS; my 2011 GMC Acadia Denali; and my mother’s 2000 Buick LeSabre. The Buick had the smoothest ride, while the leather bucket seats in the other 2 vehicles fit my body quite well.

  4. By far, it would have to be the Lincoln Town Car. Owned a 2000 and 2003 and they went through pot holes or railroad tracks without the slightest rattle, just a mild thud at most.

  5. 1972 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham, 2 door coupe, B5 Blue, white vinyl top, white leather power bucket seats, every single available option at the time. By far, the most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven. Wish I still had it! I’ve spent HOURS searching the net and I have never seen another one like it.
If you happen to come across a pic of this car, please send me a link.

  6. Jaguar XJS V-12 coupe. Fast and smooth, it would cruise over a hundred MPH before I (or my wife) realized it. At 100-120 it was just getting it’s legs. Best car ever.

  7. The best RIDING car that I have ever been in is my 1986 Jaguar XJ-6 sedan. I bought it when I worked for Lexus sometime between 2000 and 2005. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the Lexus line, (we own 2 of them today) but during that time period Lexus had NOTHING to compare to my XJ-6 for ride quality.

  8. I found a 1989 Buick Park Avenue. It had an amazing comfortable ride. A great car for long trips. The 3800 engine was terrific.

    • I had a 2001 model, Bosses wife got an SUV and this was now my company car. Ultra – Supercharged. Looked like your Grandmothers car, but it would GO and it was luxurious!

  9. Yes, mine was the 72 Citroen SM – the same hydraulic suspension licensed to Rolls – and later others – and the height-adjustable suspension you could raise and/or lower on the fly, and the ‘heart-shaped’ cam on the steering wheel that brought the steering wheel back to dead center, and the articulated and adjustable leather seats, a great car.

  10. My 1964 Chrysler 300 K, heavy duty torsion bar suspension, it has less body roll then the GM and Ford luxury cars, and it rides just as soft as them.

  11. 2014 Cadillac Escalade was like riding a magic carpet; smooth, powerful and I only wish that I could take the seats inside my living room at night.

  12. My uncle’s seventies Ford LTD or later in his 1977/78 Lincoln Continental. I even slept like a baby in those sound proof and cushy interior cars.

  13. 1976 Oldsmobile 98 Regency – This was my father’s car which I got to drive fairly often. It just floated down the road like a cloud after he bought a new Cadillac, he gave the Olds to my brother for a college graduation gift.

  14. The 1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz custom that I own NOW! … It’s only got 31,000 original miles on it and it drives like a DREAM in EVERY respect… My kids say “it’s like driving a couch”
