After 66 years, one family has decided the time has come to let go of their grandfather’s pride and joy, but this car probably doesn’t look (or sound) much like it did when he drove it off the showroom floor in the 1950s.
The Pick of the Day is a 1956 Ford Customline two-door sedan listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Oregon City, Oregon. (Click the link to view the listing)
“My grandfather bought this car brand new in 1956 and our family has had it since,” the listing reads. “In 2007, a total frame-off restoration was done with over $120k invested in the car.” In the 15 years since, the car has reportedly been garage-kept and has accrued just over 3,000 miles on its modern gauge set.
The Customline model first came to market in 1952 as a mid-range offering, bridging the gap between the entry-level Mainline and the flagship Crestline. The exterior grew in length and width when a new generation debuted in 1955, offered in two-door sedan and four-door sedan models only. A hardtop was added the following year, but the model was phased out by 1957 when Ford reworked its full-size passenger car lineup to include just the Custom and the Fairlane.
Very few components of this 1956 Customline’s original DNA remain in place since it underwent the full inside-and-out restomod treatment a decade and a half ago. When this car was new, it would have been outfitted with either a 223cid inline-six or a 272cid V8. Gone is that original powerplant, and in its place now resides a big-block 390ci V8. Power is sent to the pavement through a Toploader four-speed manual transmission and a narrowed 9” positraction rear end.
Customization for this Customline extends to the interior where a Hurst shift lever, a Vintage Air HVAC system, a custom steering wheel, and a hidden stereo bring modern creature comforts within arm’s reach.
“This is a must-see in person car,” the listing states. “The body is so straight and the paint is beautiful. With a very smooth ride, a quiet interior and the serious exhaust note, it is a must-drive.”
The seller is asking $45,000 for this very custom Customline.
