A group of exotics and supercars from a single collection lifted RM Sotheby’s 19th annual Fort Lauderdale, Florida, auction, but it was Kid Rock’s personal Ford GT that led the bidding.
The Rey Collection, which sold 91 percent of its lots, helped the Florida auction reach a $16.9 million in total sales for the two-day auction. The Rey consignment achieved sales of $3.8 million.
The 2005 Ford GT owned since new by Kid Rock was the top seller at $638,000 (all results include auction fees), the sale sweetened by the addition of a Ford GT poster signed by legendary designer Camilo Pardo, as well as a guitar autographed by Kid Rock.
The Ford GT apparently benefited from a celebrity bump since a different 2005 example sold at the same auction for about $200,000 less.
The remainder of the top-10 sellers was dominated by sports and GT cars, with a sole pre-war classic, a 1938 Horch 853 Sport Cabriolet, breaking into the ranks at the No. 7 position with a $374,000 sale. Like most of the highest sellers, the Horch was from the Rey Collection.
Low-mileage Lamborghinis from the Rey Collection scored the second and third spots, a 1984 Lamborghini Countach LP5000 S by Bertone showing fewer than 9,000 miles that went for $632,500, and a 1998 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster with 3,000 miles for $467,500.
Other Italian favorites from the Rey collection reached the next two positions, with a 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi, fully restored and showing just 7,208 miles, selling for $462,000, and a 1972 Maserati Ghibli SS 4.9 Coupe by Ghia going to a new owner for $352,000.
Another notable sale was that of a rarely seen 1990 Riva Ferrari 32, the result of a collaboration between the Italian automaker and boat builder and one of just 40 produced, which hit $299,000, a solid result for the model.
