The Rothmans Porsche Turbo Cup Series was a Canada-based, single-marque race series established in 1988 and running for three seasons. Throughout the short-lived series, 1988 Porsche 944 Turbos were modified with the same specs for all teams.

The Pick of the Day is a 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo that raced in the Rothmans series, listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealership in Philadelphia.

“The example offered here is chassis JN165073, built in late December 1987,” the dealership notes in the listing. “Finished in Alpine White, JN165073 is the 12th of just 39 Rothmans Series spec cars and 1 of 2 cars campaigned by Canadian dealer Mark Motors of Ottawa.

“Mark Motors took delivery of the vehicle in late April 1988 and enlisted grassroots racer David Seabrooke to campaign the car for each of the 3 seasons. Seabrooke made frequent televised appearances and would go on to earn multiple top-10 finishes.”

Each of the 1988 Porsche 944s prepped for the Rothmans Series had no less than 52 enhancements that differentiated it from the road-going version. A 944 Turbo in the Rothmans Series was 600 pounds lighter than the street version due to such upgraded parts las magnesium intake manifold and oil pan, fiberglass hood, thinner interior carpeting and lightweight wheels.

This Weissach-built factory racecar is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-inline 4-cylinder engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.

“It is said that Seabrooke retained JN165073 after its official time on track before passing the car along to one Robert Munro, who commissioned a complete restoration in April of 1991,” the listing notes. “In July of 2002, ownership of the car passed to Dr. Ronald Teitjen, a prominent Connecticut-based Porsche Collector and Historic Race Car driver. Tejten would campaign and track the car regularly at private track and various PCA events, according to the vehicle’s logbooks.”

This Porsche is ready for vintage racing with an asking price of $88,000 or best offer, and the sale includes CASC and PCA logbooks, invoices, correspondence and race series-era photographsTo view this listing on ClassicCars.com, see Pick of the Day.

  1. I had a 1975 Ford Pinto Pony MPG with a built 2.3 liter engine, and a C6 transmission to 3.90 gears. I could kill 924 and sometimes a 944 with a 200 horsepower Pinto sedan. Gawd they were flummoxed. In disbelief of what just happened. A Pinto?
