The 2022 NASCAR season starts this Sunday with the Daytona 500. If one is so inclined, you could own a NASCAR stock car with a race-proven pedigree and full restoration.
The Pick of the Day is a 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo stock car with 113 NASCAR races advertised on ClassicCars.com from a dealer in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
“This car has a long and colorful history and comes with many pictures and documentation from its past,” the seller said. “It was built in 1979 at Banjo Products for James Hylton as chassis number BP-7909. It was originally bodied as a yellow Caprice and was known as the ‘Tijuana Taxi.’ The next year, it was rebodied as a Monte Carlo and was eventually converted to an Aerocoupe in 1986.”
Under the hood is a dry-sump small-block V8 Chevrolet engine built by Motor Masters that the dealer says produces 651 horsepower. The engine is paired with a Jerico 4-speed manual transmission and a 9-inch Ford rear with external cooler. It has Alcon brakes at all four corners with cross-drilled 6-piston calipers in the front and 4-pistons calipers in the rear.
This is a 110-inch wheelbase race car with a symmetric chassis, and the trailing arms, Panhard bar, springs and shocks are set up for road racing.
The spartan interior has a Kirkey racing seat and a set of Stewart Warner gauges, and James Hylton signed the dash. It features dual MSD ignitions, fire-suppression system, a brake proportioning setup and a temperature gauge for the oil tank. The car is race ready and was recently prepped by Valu Prep Motorsports.
“The car was raced continuously throughout the United States for many years,” the dealer states. “It even competed in Australia at the Thunderdome in the late ‘80s as part of the NASCAR push in that country. Then, after an accident at Road America, the entire car was torn down and rebuilt to make the car stronger/straighter/safer/nicer.
“It was also returned to its 1986 livery as raced by Mr. Hylton, which was done with hand-painted graphics. The project was completed by Bill Rhyne Racing of Denver, NC, in time for the 2013 Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca.”
The dealer is asking $69,500 for this piece of NASCAR history. Note that this is purely a race car and not street legal, and there is no title.

This would really cool to road race!!!! I love it!
This would really cool to road race!!!! I love it! Remind me the summers when I enduro raced out old Chevy wagon, the 67 Newport (best enduro race car I raced, she lasted an unheard of 4 races) and a Buick Rivera.
Needs body work, namely holes for headlights, taillights, and to mount an old license plate, paint it one color then let the fun begin 😜
I’ll give you 5000.00 for it
