Bonhams seaside Zoute auction led by 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport

The Belgian sale that was held on the beach reaches $14.8 million

-

After a 15-way bidding battle, a 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport sold for €2,242,500 ($2,585,715) to lead Bonhams collector car auction on the beach in Zoute, Belgium.

The Bugatti, one of just 30 Super Sport variants of the seminal EB110, was expected to be the top seller before the auction started and, according to Bonhams, it did not disappoint as the star of the show.

“Its popularity continued in the packed saleroom, which had a new cabaret layout, with the car being the subject of a 15-way bidding war between the saleroom, the internet and telephone bidders, before it was sold to a private Dutch collector on the telephone, to applause from the lively Zoute crowd,” Bonhams said in a news release.

The Zoute sale returned Bonhams to its “tradition location on the beach at Knokke-le-Zoute, attaining a total of €12.3 million ($14.8 million), the highest amount achieved since the auction was first staged in 2012,” Bonhams said.  All sale results include auction fees.

The auction reported a 79 percent sell-through rate, with 46 vehicles sold out of the 58 offered.

1989 Ferrari F40 Berlinetta is in like-new condition

Following behind the Bugatti sale was that of a “time-warp” 1989 Ferrari F40 Berlinetta that achieved 1,840,000 ($2,121,660). The one-owner example of Ferrari’s 40th anniversary supercar had been dry-stored since 1992 and driven fewer than 1,800 kilometers (1,118 miles) from new.

Three more Ferraris were the next highest-selling auction cars, with a 1968 365 GTC coupe hitting 655,500 ($755,841), a 1961 250 GTE 2+2 coupe at €592,250 ($682,909) and a 2005 575 SuperAmerica reaching €529,000 ($609,980).

Other highlights of the auction included:

The 1954 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible “State Limousine,” belonging to King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola of Belgium, and which served as the royal couple’s wedding car in December 1960, sold for €86,250 ($99,453).

A 1967 Aston Martin DB6 Sports Saloon, which also surpassed its estimate, achieving €241,500 ($278,468).

A tiny 1964 Fiat 500D Trasformabile punched above its weight at Zoute, charming the crowd and achieving €57,500 ($66,302), nearly doubling its pre-sale estimate.

1955 Jaguar XK 140 Coupé by Ghia is a one-of-a-kind restoration project

A Carrozzeria Ghia-bodied 1955 Jaguar XK 140 Coupé that debuted at the 1956 Paris Motor Show, and presented at auction in rough condition as a restoration project, sold for €287,500 ($331,510).

“It was a fantastic return to Zoute for us,” said Maarten Ten Holder, managing director of  Bonhams Motoring and the sale’s auctioneer. “The sale’s success and the energy and enthusiasm of the Zoute crowd made it a very festive afternoon. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and, of course, to have achieved such a strong result.”
