It was a weekend of retro style and vintage vehicles as the Goodwood Motor Circuit celebrated its annual Goodwood Revival meeting.
In addition to a Bonhams collector car auction, the event featured a celebration of the life and career of the late Stirling Moss with a parade each day of cars he had raced and with tributes from Derek Bell, Jackie Stewart, Damon Hill and the Duke of Richmond.
At the sun was setting Friday, the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy race was staged, won by a Jaguar E-type driven by Harvey Stanley and James Cottingham.
Other featured races included the all-Mini John Whitmore Trophy, won by Nick Swift and Andrew Jordan, and the Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration won by Ollie Bryant and Darren Turner in the Bryant family’s AC Cobra.
A special event during the Goodwood Revival is the Settrington Cup, a pedal-car race for children, This year, SU carburetor producer Burlen provided a new Austin J40 police pedal car that served as “course car” for the race.

New this year were a Make-Do and Mend area where spectators were able to enhance their vintage wardrobes by making their own headband and knickers., and an inaugural Car Boot Sale with vendors offing vintage designer clothes, homeware, books and trinkets.
The track also hosted a re-creation of the 1946 London Victory Parade with more than 150 historic military vehicles driving down the Pit Lane Straight.
In anticipation of the inaugural Eroica Britannia cycling festival, scheduled for August 6-7, 2022, at Goodwood, 150 riders on vintage bicycles took a lap of the racing circuit on Sunday.
New BRM unveiled at Goodwood
The California Spyder Revival model from GTO Engineering wasn’t the only vehicle launch taking place at the Goodwood Revival gathering this past weekend in England.
John Owen, 82-year-old son of BRM principal Alfred Owen, took delivery of the first “new” P15 V16 race car built by British Racing Motors to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the racing team and its cars. Also on hand at Goodwood were more than 35 BRM racing cars, produced between 1949 and 1974.
When three original but unassigned P15 chassis numbers were discovered, BRM specialists Hall and Hall were commissioned to create cars for those numbers using original blueprints but having to fabricate many of the individual parts.
‘60s-inspired Squalo shown in half scale
Also displayed at the Goodwood Revival was a half-scale model of the Squalo, a ‘60s-inspired but modern sports car being developed in the UK by GTO Engineering. Squalo is Italian for “shark” and will be powered by a new V12 engine. Deliveries to customers are planned for 2023.
American Speed Festival opens September 30
The inaugural American Speed Festival opens September 30 at the M1 Concourse facility in Pontiac, Michigan, and not only has announced its schedule of events, but the first fund-raiser for its charitable arm and a new family friendly admission price.
The event celebrates motorsports past, present and future.
“The American Speed Festival allows race fans to get close to some of the greatest performance and race cars in the world and learn more about some of the legends of the sport,” M1 Concourse chief executive Tim McGrane is quoted in a news release. “It’s fitting too that our first event in the new Event Center will honor race legend Jim Hall and will benefit our new initiative with the Pontiac Community Foundation, M1 Mobility.”
The M1 Mobility effort is the first for the facility’s Checker Flag Challenge arm, and is designed to provide “transportation solutions that connect Pontiac residents with essential community services and programs.”
The M1 Concourse is a private facility built on the former site of a General Motors assembly plant and features the Speed Ring, a 1.5-mile road course that will be active during the middle two of the four-day event.
“After the success of our recent Woodward Dream Show a few weeks back, we listened to our customers and we’re announcing new, family-friendly prices,” said Dave Sherman, vice president of Signature Events at M1. “We created a new price for admission, and opportunities to purchase food and drinks separately and added daily live entertainment, including music and RC cars for kids to race themselves.
“We have also created free rides with a professional driver on Sunday on the M1 Concourse circuit. So, this is truly a celebration of racing and performance for our guests.”
The new pricing is $75 per adult, with children under age 12 admitted free.
The inaugural “Master of Motorsport” to be honored at the festival is Jim Hall of Chaparral racing car and racing team fame.
“Jim Hall’s advancements in terms of aerodynamics and engineering advancements have far-reaching implications for the automotive world,” McGrane noted.
“I don’t know that there is anyone who, by himself, changed the sport of auto racing globally as much as Jim Hall,” added George Levy, president of the Motorsport Hall of Fame of America and the author of an upcoming authorized biography of Hall. “To car crazy kids like me in the 1960s, Jim Hall was the Neil Armstrong of motorsports during that time.”
Among other motorsports stars scheduled to take part in the festival are Indy winner Bobby Rahal, who will show his newly restored 1966 Eagle-Ford Indy racer, as well as former racer David Hobbs.
The festival also includes a “Dine and Drive” tour of Detroit automotive history, a judged car show, garage tours, and more.
Creighton Farms hosts Cars & Cappuccino
The Creighton Farms development in Aldie, Virginia, again hosts a Cars & Cappuccino event “in the spirit of the Mille Miglia,” the famed sports car road rally across Italy.
“It’s a fun but serious car show that anyone can enjoy, from the most diligent car aficionado to those who just love cool cars,” Wayne Trudeau of Southworth Development, parent of Creighton Farms, is quoted in a news release. “Many of our residents are avid collectors with a big interest in vintage and rare autos.”
The car show on October 23 has a Then and Now theme, often pairing vintage and current versions of vehicles, and runs from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., although some of the cars will depart at noon on a road rally.
Hilton Head announces new classes
The Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance has announced several new classes for its event November 7: Future Classics of the 20th & 21st Centuries, Homologation Specials, High-end Hot Rods, RRM Future Class, the later featuring cars restored by younger, next-generation owners.
‘Soo Sik C6” Corvette latest Hot Wheels winner
Houston native Michael Tran started with a 6th-generation 2007 Chevrolet Corvette, but retained only the engine and frame as he transformed it into a car so sick it won the most recent stop on the Hot Wheels Legends Tour.
Tran fabricated a new body for his car, redid the interior, and installed a couple of rear-mounted turbochargers to boost horsepower to around 1,000. Other features include custom wheels and exhaust and a new headlamp design. The “Soo Sik C6” thus becomes a candidate to be turned into a real 1:64-scale Hot Wheels toy. The Tour finals are scheduled for mid-November.
