Our weekly roundup of car show news and notes

In Salem, New Hampshire, Tuscan Village Salem hosts its own Concorso Italiano, and this year it’s scheduled for Sunday, August 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  This show features exotic cars (and not just from Italy) as well as live music and food tents.

According to its website, Tuscan Village Salem is a shopping, dining, residential, entertainment development — “the art of life” — midway between Boston and Salem, New Hampshire.

At its recent Grand Nationals car show in New Ulm, Minnesota, the Antique Automobile Club of America awarded its Zenith award as the best restoration of the year to a 1917 Locomobile 48 Sportif Victoria owned by John McAlpin of Naples, New York.

The car originally was built for the Leggett Family (owners of Rexall Drug Stores) and was delivered to their estate in Newport, Rhode Island. The coachwork design was done by J. Frank deCausse of the Kellner Studios in Paris and was produced by the Farnham-Nelson Wagon Works in Brookline, Massachusetts. The car’s exterior colors — Pacific Coral and Deep Slate Blue Gray — match those of the Rexall Drug store signs.

The 1917 48 Sportif Victoria is powered by a 550cid, 82-horsepower 6-cylinder engine and is believed to be the only one of three such cars to have survived.

Runner-up for the Zenith was a 1930 Ruxton Model C roadster by Rauch & Lang, owned by Cal and Dave High of Willow Street, Pennsylvania.

Electric-powered vehicles will race on the isle of Sardinia | Extreme E photo

After cancelling its scheduled events in South America because of the continuing coronavirus pandemic, the Extreme E electrified off-road racing series has announced it will stage the Island X Prix on October 23-24 on the Italian island of Sardinia.

“Extreme E was built around the ethos of racing electric vehicles in remote environments in an effort to raise awareness for climate change issues and showcase the performance and benefits of low carbon vehicles,” said Alejandro Agag, series founder.

“However, this crisis is not a problem which only affects remote locations. It is becoming increasingly noticeable closer to home, across North America, and here across Europe, with rising temperatures, heatwaves and wildfires, which currently rage in Sardinia itself, being some of the latest devastating examples.

“We will use the power of sport to educate on the causes of these climate issues which are taking place right here in front of us, as we aim to open the eyes even wider to the need for all of us to take collective action, now, before it’s too late.”
