RM Sotheby’s has postponed its 23rd annual Amelia Island, Florida, collector car auction from March until May, following the rescheduling of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance because of coronavirus pandemic concerns.
The auction held at the Ritz Carlton resort will take place May 22, one day preceding the Amelia Island Concours on the golf links at the resort.
“It is both ours and The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation’s primary goal to ensure the good health and well-being of our customers, event attendees and staff,” the auction company said in a brief news release.
RM Sotheby’s conducts one of three major car auctions during the Amelia Concours week, a premier collector car gathering that attracts thousands of people from around the world. The other two auctions, held by Gooding & Company and Bonhams, are likely to change their dates as well to coincide with the rescheduled concours.
In March 2020, just before the pandemic closed everything down, the Amelia Island events carried on as usual. The auctions were just a bit off as the coronavirus was becoming more widespread, although RM Sotheby’s sold 56 of its 62 offerings for a total of $35.8 million.
The Amelia Concours, in making its postponement announcement last week, expressed the prevailing hope that the COVID vaccinations being administered across the country will by May lessen the pandemic to once again allow large gatherings and major events.
As 2021 begins, a number of major automotive events that were scheduled for the first few months of the year have been canceled or postponed, carrying over the massive number of events that were affected by the pandemic during 2020.
