Paris-based auction house Artcurial was in Monaco recently for a “return to the Rock” sale of jewelry, watches, vintage Hermes fashion and collector cars. The 90 cars on the docket contributed $8.3 million toward the overall sales total of $16.1 million, Artcurial reported.
While an emerald-cut 10.42 carat diamond ring sold for $957,372, the top sale of the auctions was a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing coupe that had been driven only 38,000 miles since new. The car sold for $1.416 million.
A 1990 Ferrari F40 brought $1,093,944 and a 1957 300 SL roadster went for $978,348.
Among the auction highlights was a 1962 Bentley S3 Continental cabriolet by Park Ward that was purchased new by singer Eddie Fisher, who at the time was married to actress Elizabeth Taylor. The car sold for $346,650.
