Landmark Route 66 gift shop mascot becomes virus compliant

Even Buck Atom is wearing a mask these days.

If you’ve traveled historic Route 66 through Tulsa, Oklahoma, you likely remember Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios, a Mother Road landmark with its tall missile-toting cowboy.

According to a report in the Tulsa World, store owner Mary Beth Babcock commissioned artist Adam Carnes so Buck could meet the mandate of a local ordinance that requires folks in Tulsa to wear face masks during the coronavirus pandemic.

For those who haven’t been on that section of Route 66, Buck Atom is the “Space Cowboy” on a mission to celebrate the magic of the Mother Road and to encourage its future. If Buck looks familiar, it’s because he was a former Muffler Man mascot redone as a rodeo cowboy who somehow found himself in the Space Age.

By the way, during the pandemic, Bucks is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The shop allows only 4 customers at a time and sanitizes between visitors.

For more information, visit Buck’s website.
