Hershey Fall Meet, Hilton Head concours canceled

Even as many businesses and sports events are being allowed to re-open across the country, automotive events that draw large crowds continue to be cancelled. The latest include the annual AACA Eastern Fall Meet at Hershey, Pennsylvania, and the Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance.

“Please note: As of 5/28/2020, the Eastern Fall Meet has been cancelled,” it was reported on the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Fall Meet website.

This is the first time in the events 65-year history at the Fall Meet has been canceled. The AACA’s Hershey Region executive board said the decision was difficult, that it knows some people will be upset and others will applaud the decision, but that the “health and welfare” of those involved in staging such an event had to be considered.

Meanwhile, Hilton Head organizers said, “Without a clear picture of how the virus will be impacting lives come October, and with no influence or control over potential new or ongoing safety processes, we have concluded that we cannot assuredly provide a safe environment for this gathering of over 20,000 people.  

“Further, our major supporters and sponsors face the same ambiguity as they consider their financial investment for a fall 2020 event, as well as the safety of their own event staff.”

And the Hershey Fall Meet and Hilton Head concours aren’t alone. Also being canceled or postponed are:

• The Concours d’Elegance at Copshahlom in South Bend, Indiana, canceled for 2020. The 2021 date has been set for July 10.
• The Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance in Malvern, Pennsylvania, canceled for 2020. The 2021 dates are September 10-12.
• At the recommendation of the Russian Ministry of Sport and Russian Automotive Federation, the 10th Silk Way Rally, scheduled for July 2-11 from Paris to Moscow to Beijing, has been canceled for 2020. Officials say they are working on 2021 dates for an event that is part of both the world auto and motorcycle cross-country rally championships.
• Mecum has canceled its collector car auction at Denver and has rescheduled its sale at Houston for December 3-5.
