The 1960s. Stockers. Gassers. Modifieds. Rails…
Today’s video shows the early years of Atco Raceway in Atco, New Jersey. It is fun to watch, not only for the cars and the girls (who are grandmas now), but for the period narration by then local newscaster Tom Brookshier of TV 10 – which cracked me up several times.
The visuals are as gritty as the sport was back then. Undoubtedly a trip back in time. A visit to Atco Raceway’s website today reveals corporate sponsors and grassroots to top-flight events. However, remembering the people who took their passion for burning rubber and high speeds and translated it from illegal racing on the streets to the track is not unlike being a fly on the wall for the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The Journal reveres automotive history, and your editorial staff, like many of you, were there to witness much of it. Enjoy the show.
