More cancelations, but VanDerBrink plans live auction for May 30

Our updated list of automotive events impacted by the global pandemic

-

The coronavirus pandemic is having a major impact on automotive events, many of which are being canceled or postponed. Here are the latest announcements:

  • The North American International Auto Show in Detroit, formerly held in January but moved this year to June in an effort to reinvigorate the event, has been canceled because the host TCF Center has been designated as a field hospital for virus cases for at least six months.
  •  The AACA has canceled its Western Spring Nationals and Founders Tour, scheduled for April in Arizona, and has canceled its Central Spring Nationals, scheduled for May in Auburn, Indiana.
  •  The National Corvette Museum’s Motorsports Park has extended its closure until April 22.
  • The LaJolla Concours d’Elegance has been rescheduled for September 19-20.
  •  Scuderia Southwest has canceled the Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering scheduled for April 4 in Arizona.

On the other hand, VanDerBrink Auctions plans to resume live in-person events with a sale of the Virgil Marple Collection of around 100 collector cars and antique tractors on May 30 in Maple Plain, Minnesota.

“(The late) Virgil Marple and his wife traveled the U.S looking for orphan cars,” VanDerBrink reports. “His collection has over 40 Studebakers, many Packards, Pierce Arrow, Franklin, along with Chevrolet, and several antique tractors.

“Being an engineer, he was constantly looking for cars that showed excellence in mechanical engineering. Studebaker, Packard, along with other 0rphan cars proved to intrigue his engineer thinking.”
