With partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 80s, the 22nd Goodguys Speedway Motors Southwest Nationals wrapped up the rod and custom car group’s 2019 calendar in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the season’s class-winning vehicles were brought together for a special display.
Joining those winners was yet another gathering of hundreds of high-quality vehicles and high-energy owners.
Prior to the Goodguys weekend showcase, many of the participants had made their way along a driving tour that visited three local facilities — Airpark Motorsports, Ram Jet’s Speed Shop, and the new Speedway Motors fulfillment center.
Leading into the three-day visit to WestWorld, 11 of the 12 season winners were lined up, almost as the welcome committee. The last member of the Top 12 — the Goodguys FAST AutoCrosser of the year — was yet to be decided as the show began.
A 32-car Duel in the Desert was held to select that 12th season champion. Scott Fraser defended his 2018 title in Bruce Cambern’s ’66 Cobra with the fastest run in 34.999 seconds.
Also selected as a finalist for the Goodguys’ 2020 Muscle Car of the Year competition was Stephen Burke’s Hemi-powered ’68 Dodge Super Bee.
In addition, the Gary’s Pick award, named in honor of the Goodguys late founder Gary Meadors, was presented to Deane and Robin Wilson and their ’61 Impala. Close to 40,000 miles were logged by the couple as they traveled to each Goodguys’ 2019 shows.
The conclusion of the Scottsdale event was All American Sunday featuring American-made and American-powered vehicles of all years. Those cars not only filled the show field but also the AutoCross course.
Presented by Spectre Performance, an All American Shootout was staged on Sunday, focused on the eight fastest vehicles. Per tradition, all awards were presented during a Sunday afternoon ceremony to close the 22nd Goodguys Speedway Motors Southwest Nationals.
