Michael Schumacher documentary set for December release

-

A new documentary will tell the story of history’s greatest Formula One driver: Michael Schumacher. The documentary, called simply “Schumacher,” is set for release in Europe this December before it debuts in the US in early 2020, Motorsport Magazine reported Tuesday.

Before then, the report cites European media that claim a trailer for the new documentary will be shown this week at the Cannes Film Festival. For Schumacher fans, it will provide never-before-seen footage of the former racer and his family.

It’s rumored the film may also feature footage of Schumacher’s 50th birthday celebration this year. If so, it would be the first glimpse we’ve received of Schumacher following his debilitating accident in 2013. Schumacher fell and hit his head while skiing, which left him in a medically induced coma for three months.

Schumacher’s family, friends, and colleagues have provided rare updates on the retired F1 legend’s health since his accident. Schumacher’s wife Corrina, father Rolf, and his children are said to be part of the production. The film also has the family’s full blessing, according to the report.

While the documentary will not focus on his life after the skiing accident, it will recap the German’s incredible racing achievements. Driving for Ferrari, Schumacher dominated F1 between 2000 and 2004. During that period, he won five consecutive World Championships.

In total, Schumacher won seven World Championships, amassed 91 race wins, and competed for 19 seasons. No other driver has matched his championship and race win figures even to this day.
